Recap / Captain N The Game Master S 1 E 1 Kevin In Videoland

Go To

Unable to resist the forces of the evil Mother Brain, Princess Lana is gifted with the help of a hero from outside her world who knows all its secrets. It's up to this ordinary teenager to unite Videoland's squabbling heroes and stand up to Mother Brain.

Tropes:

  • Animation Bump: The animation of this episode is noticeably more crisp and flows much better than a lot of the later episodes.
  • Big Fancy Castle: The Palace of Power, made up of dozens of floating towers. Nobody seems to live there except the princess and the N Team; it's a complete mystery what they do with all the space.
  • Disappeared Dad: We hear Lana's father is missing, but it'll be several episodes before what actually happened to him's explained.
  • Genre Savvy: Kevin's chosen to be Videoland's hero because he's already played all the games and knows their secrets. We see how fast and loose the writers are willing to play this advantage of Kevin's, when he knows how to find the right warp zone to Metroid. Even though there's no such thing as warps between different games where he's from.
  • I Choose to Stay: Kevin has the option to go home at the end...but after hearing his mother's nagging, decides he'd rather avoid cleaning his room and taking out the trash to fight video-villains for a while.
  • Instant Expert: Besides knowing all the games' secrets from having played them, Kevin figures out how his belt works with perfect precision right away. Aside from how fast it runs out of energy, anyway...
  • Plot-Driven Breakdown: For the first time we see how handily Kevin's gadgets run down their battery right before he might need them. This time when he's about to shoot Mother Brain and end the show right in the pilot.
  • Princesses Rule: Princess Lana is ruling Videoland in the king's absence.
  • Refusal of the Call: At first Kevin denies the prophecy, but he starts going along with this "hero" thing after his first encounter with King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard.
  • Save the Princess: The mission where Kevin proves his mettle to the rest of the N Team, saving Lana from her prison on Metroid.
  • Summon Everyman Hero: A teenage Nintendo fan has to save the worlds of his favorite games.
  • Two-Headed Coin: Simon uses one (with his own face on it) to settle the argument of which warp they take to Metroid to save Lana.

The real question is how did Kevin not see them?

How well does it match the trope?
