Recap / Camp Camp S 1 E 1 Escape From Camp Campbell

Go To

Max tries to take advantage of the bus dropping off new campers to Camp Campbell to mount an escape. Newcomers Nikki and Neil ask some important questions (that they don't really get answers to), and David tries to sing a song.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Cameron Campbell refers to Gwen as "Grace" and "Gretchen".
  • Adolf Hitlarious: Dolph is first introduced in this episode, painting a German Shepard that looks an awful lot like Hitler's dog Blondi, who is wearing an armband and has a flower with petals in the shape of a swastika.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Cameron Campbell blames the decline of the camp on video games, the internet, and the Affordable Care Act.
  • Curse Cut Short: Max is about to tell David to "Suck a dick" before the latter picks him up.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Max steals the camp bus only to ram it into a tree because he doesn't know how to drive.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Several, since it's the first episode.
    • David and Max's bubbly-vs-spiteful relationship is established in their very first line of dialogue.
David: Can you believe it, Max? We're getting not one, not three, but two new campers!
Max: Yep. It's really, truly horrifying.
    • David and Gwen's dynamic gets a similar treatment.
    David: Goooood morning, Gwen!
    Gwen: MOTHERFUCKER!
    • Nikki asserting dominance by biting down on David's hand.
    • Neil's explosive rant when he realizes what kind of camp he's been shipped to.
    • Nerris violently LARPing the shit out of Harrison, all while hurling dice at him and screaming "LIGHTNING BOLT!"
    • Space Kid sums up his entire character in his very first line of dialogue.
Space Kid: (While duct-taped to the ceiling fan) Crank it to high! I can take the Gs!
  • Everyone Meets Everyone: All of the campers and councilors at Camp Campbell in the condensed cast are introduced in this episode.
  • First Day of School Episode: Sort of an inversion, with this being a summer camp, but from Neil and Nikki's point of view, this is what the episode is to them.
  • Foreshadowing: "I'm not here to make friends, David. I'm here because camp is where kids are sent when their parents don't want to deal with them."
  • Unique Pilot Title Sequence: Instead of the theme song playing like it does in most episodes, David sings the song in-universe.
David: [singing] Ooooh! There's a place I know that's tucked away. A place where you and I can stay. Where we can go to laugh and play and have adventured every day. I know it sounds hard to believe but guys and gals, it's true. Camp Campbell is the place for me and-
    Gwen: The kids are gone.
  • Welcome Episode: Nikki and Neil are welcomed to the camp.
