- Cool Uncle: Calvin likes Max and has fun interacting with him for the week he's there, and at the end of the visit wants to go with Max.
- Put on a Bus: Max leaves at the end of the arc and is never seen or mentioned again in the strip's run. Watterson would later say that he couldn't figure out how to utilize him effectively.
- Whoopee Cushion: Calvin really wants to sit next to Max at the dinner table, and his mom thinks it's because she likes him so much, but he actually wanted to slip a whoopie cushion onto his chair.
