Recap / Calvin And Hobbes The Series S 2 E 9 Camp Blues

Go To

Calvin bursts in his room one summer day shrieking like a madman, and Hobbes quickly shuts him up so that he can find out what he's freaking out about. As it turns out, he's returning to Camp Pine, which (as Socrates quickly lets the viewers know) was the setting for Calvin and Hobbes: The Movie. Calvin pulls out the list, revealing that Andy is also attending. Socrates doesn't really care about any of this until it's also revealed that Elliot is attending as well!

Wait, who's Elliot? Calvin and Hobbes don't know, but Socrates angrily informs them that he's his owner, and he'd be likely to drag him along! Calvin continues to complain, now joined by Socrates, while Hobbes tries to appease the former.

Later, Calvin packs quite a bit of junk into his Hypercube, then attempts to find Hobbes, tearing up the house in the process. Eventually, he finds him in the closet and they have a fight, which ends with both of them being thrown into their room. Undaunted, Calvin simply uses a Bedsheet Ladder to go see Andy and Sherman (the former of which isn't too happy about the camp).

The next day, the bus comes. Everyone boards one by one, and we get our first glimpse of Elliot... with a hoodie made to block his face.

When they arrive at the camp, everyone signs in, and a Time-Compression Montage ensues wherein Calvin endures a lot of Amusing Injuries.

The fic skips ahead to the last day, where everyone is happy to leave. They eat in the cafeteria, where a Food Fight takes place, and the MTM ends up in a wastebin. Later, the counselor tells the kids that there are bears loose in the area, but the protagonists don't hear this, and much later Calvin realizes he's lost the MTM. With some coercing, he gets the rest of the group to search with him.

They head into the woods and split up, and soon enough Calvin finds himself staring straight at the bear. The main four protagonists find themselves trapped in the rafters, the bear circling below, but Sherman (who was in the aforementioned wastebin) finds the MTM and uses it to fire a laser at the ceiling, alerting the others to their predicament and allowing them to survive.

The campers return home the next day, and Calvin's dad suggests he go back next year, which prompts Calvin to start beating him savagely while Hobbes watches, bemused.

Tropes:

  • As You Know: Socrates exploits this somewhat; see below.
"Camp Pine?" He asked. "You mean that place in the middle of nowhere, where you two got lost in the mountain range?"
    Calvin and Hobbes nodded.
    "You were attacked by aliens?"
    Calvin and Hobbes nodded.
"A deranged camp instructor was involved?"
    Calvin and Hobbes nodded.
    "I'm extremely handsome?"
Calvin and Hobbes shook their heads.
  • Bears Are Bad News
  • Bedsheet Ladder: Calvin and Hobbes use one.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Socrates does this when he finds out Elliot's attending.
  • Food Fight
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!
  • Long List: The list of things Calvin packed for the trip:
In his hypercube, Calvin packed his MTM, Time Pauser, Mega-Shrinker 5000, Atomic Freezer, Transmogrifier gun, Time Machine / Duplicator / Transmogrifier / Book Transport / Movie Transport, comic books, Mini Duplicator, a can of tuna fish, a mini DVD player, several DVDs, a DVD recorder, a digital camera, more comic books, a box of Milky Way chocolate bars, A Far Side day calender, a computer keyboard, a bird cage, a grandfather clock, A box of Oreo cookies, a bag of Kispy Kreme doughnuts, 450 M&M tubes, a tapestry, a Spongebob Squarepants pinata, a baseball bat, chocolate chip cookies, another keyboard, and a three inch tall Batman action figure.
OK, I think that covered about two or three percent.
  • Noodle Incident:
The bus then picked up Susie, who sat as far away from Calvin as she could get. She was still angry at him for last week's "Soda can incident". No comment.
  • Overly Long Gag: Both in and out of universe, Socrates signing his name.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Hobbes does this at the end.
  • Shout-Out: Aside from the above Long List, the group watch The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle.
  • Tempting Fate:
"I just wanna know what's for lunch," [Sherman] said. "Anything could be better than those cardboard pellets back home."
Then a blue mushy thing was set down in front of him.
    Sherman stared.
    "Check that."
  • Time-Compression Montage: Lampshaded by the narrator:
Let's just have a nice little montage showing what happened during the week with music playing, shall we?
  • Tranquilizer Dart: Mr. Sharp uses one to stop the bear.
