Susie passes notes to her friend Jessica during Ms. Wormwood's class, using Calvin as the intermediary. Calvin draws Ms. Wormwood's attention to the notes, and both children get sent to the Principal.

- Batman Gambit: Susie gives Calvin a note to pass to Jessica, telling him to not read it. Calvin does, and it ends up being a note insulting Calvin for reading the note when he was told not to.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Susie tries to sneak notes to her friend during class, very much unlike her in most of her later depictions where she's a model student.
- Imagine Spot: After having been given a brief lecture by Principal Spittle on paying better attention in class, Calvin suddenly imagines himself as Spaceman Spiff and the Principal as an alien.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: While Calvin and Susie are both terrified of the punishment Principal Spittle might utilize, such as spanking, he ends up giving nothing more than a brief lecture about paying attention in class before sending them back.
- The Stool Pigeon: Calvin exposes Susie's attempts to pass notes to her friend in class, getting her in trouble with Ms. Wormwood. Susie's second note calls Calvin a squealer, seemingly in anticipation of him doing exactly that.
