"Blood Out" is the 9th episode of Season 9 and the 189th overall. It originally aired November 30, 2012.

Det. Lovato's previous undercover work with the Narcotics Unit is exposed during the case of a savagely murdered Dominican gang member.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Black Comedy: Lovato's former supervisor uses this after a suspect dies trying to jump from one rooftop to another, but Mac is not amused.
Hicks: [grinning slightly] Heard you had a falling out with Carmen Vega earlier today.
Taylor: [frowning] Young lady made a bad decision. Paid for it with her life.
Hicks: [apologetically] Gallows humor. Occupational hazard, I suppose.
  • Electric Torture: The victim is tortured by having battery charger leads attached to his pectoral muscles before being cut in half.
  • Generic Ethnic Crime Gang: The Trinitarios. Flack's take on them?
Nobody loves a good dismemberment like the Latin street crews.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: As the man is cut, all the audience sees is his blood splattering across his killer's face.
  • Hair Flip: In a flashback to her early undercover days, while trying to infiltrate a Latino drug gang that regularly hangs out in a pool hall, Det. Jamie Lovato wears a short, form-fitting, low-cut, silky red dress and flips her hair from one side to the other as she leans over to line up her cue for her next shot. The ploy works.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: The victim is cut in half by a chainsaw...while still alive.
  • The Infiltration: Det. Lovato's backstory is that she'd spent 17 months as a member of the Trinatarios, a Dominican street gang known for drug dealing, while assigned to the NYPD's Narcotics unit. She was reassigned to Homicide after her cover was blown.
  • The Informant: Hicks has a confidential informant named Raymond Cruz who, at first, impresses Mac by putting them on the trail of the suspect they're after, but who eventually turns out to be the culprit.
  • List of Transgressions: Flack says one of the suspects "should get a gold medal in the felony Olympics. He's got 17 arrests so far this year, and two open drug charges to boot."
  • Miranda Rights: Played with. Flack tells someone shooting his mouth off as he's being arrested, "Hey, Moron, one more word outta you and I'ma duct tape your mouth shut."
  • Roof Hopping: The young woman who outed Lovato as a cop to her fellow gang members attempts to elude Mac and Flack by jumping from one rooftop to another, but is unsuccessful.
  • You Know Who Said That?: Played for a laugh while Mac is interrogating a suspect who insists that he's telling the truth.
Hector: I cannot tell a lie. Just call me Honest Abe.
    Mac: That was George Washington.
    Hector: Same difference.
