"Reignited" is the premiere episode of Season 9 and the 181st overall. It originally aired September 28, 2012.
When a good friend of Mac's from the FDNY, Capt. Curtis Smith, is killed in a suspicious fire, Mac enlists the help of a recently released pyromaniac arsonist to solve the case.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Destination Defenestration: Leonard Brooks jumps out a window to escape his about-to-explode apartment. The killer that set off the explosion in the first place also gets thrown out the window by the blast.
  • Due to the Dead: Christine attends Captain Curtis' funeral with Mac.
  • Firefighter Arsonist: Inverted. A firebug is also a wannabe firefighter, having applied and been turned down no less than 11 times in at least 3 boroughs before the events of this episode. He had also set an abandoned car on fire in an alley two weeks prior, just to watch it burn. He arrives at a genuine apartment building fire dressed in stolen turn-out gear and quickly becomes the prime suspect when Jo realizes the number on his stolen helmet is from a firehouse in a different borough. However, he's quickly ruled out by Mac on the grounds that the man's mental issues preclude him having pulled off such a complex plot.
  • Hockey Fight: The episode opens during a hockey game between NYPD and FDNY. Danny, Don and Adam are on the NYPD's team. An FDNY player shoves Danny and a fight breaks out.
  • Interservice Rivalry: As the fight between the two hockey teams escalates, Mac snarks to Curtis, "I guess there's no truth to the rumor that the departments hate each other."
  • Pyromaniac: The ex-con arsonist has a crazed fan who also becomes one and even copies his technique.
  • Scars Are Forever: Mac's now-healed bullet wound from the previous season's finale, "Near Death," is clearly shown in the opening scene.
  • Side Bet: Mac and Curtis have a standing bet on the outcome of the hockey games - winner buys the loser dinner. Curtis takes this one... for the sixth time in a row. Mac says he's tired of losing.
  • Sequel Episode: The arsonist, Leonard Brooks, will be back in the following episode, "Where There's Smoke."
  • Too Dumb to Live: The killer booby-traps Brooks' apartment by breaking in, breaking the glass around the lightbulb, and turning on the gas stove. When the light turns on, it eventually causes an explosion once the gas reaches it. After Brooks escapes by jumping out the window, the killer tries to escape by scrambling to undo all the locks on the door... and never once attempts to turn the light off, despite the switch being right next to the door.
  • Topless From The Back: Gender-Inverted with Mac exiting his shower with his back to the camera as the episode opens.
  • Unbroken Vigil: It is revealed via flashbacks and through conversation that Christine stayed with Mac at the hospital 16 hrs a day for the entire six months he was recovering from being shot. At the end of the episode, he gives her two dozen long-stemmed red roses as a thank-you, one for every week she stayed by his side.
  • Varying Competency Alibi: A wannabe firefighter is suspected of murder by arson, but it is discovered that he has some mental challenges that wouldn't have enabled him to come up with the elaborate trap that was laid. Mac tells Flack to let the man go because "he's a buff, not smart enough to have pulled this off."
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Lindsay and Sid are at the NYPD vs FDNY hockey game, but are completely uninterested in the action and are instead debating Woody Allen movies... until someone shouts insults at Danny. Lindsay stands up, turns to face the heckler, and angrily shouts, "You wanna come down here and say that?!"
