"Pay Up" is the 25th and final episode of Season 5 and the 117th overall. It originally aired May 14, 2009.

Newspaper magnate Robert Dunbrook's son is abducted before he can testify against his father. The team loses one member and another's life will be changed.

Beware of spoilers below!

Tropes for the episode:

  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Jessica Angell dies because she's shot by a .50 caliber Desert Eagle. Said gun is so strong that the bullet shown being taken out of her should have gone right through her and punched a noticeable hole in her back. The shot through her shoulder should have done the same, if not taken off the arm entirely.
  • Bolivian Army Cliffhanger: The season ends with everyone down on the floor of a bar amid a rain of bullets from a drive-by shooting.
  • Character Death: Jessica Angell is killed in this episode.
  • Dramatic Spine Injury: Danny is shot in the back during a drive-by shooting that happens while the team is at a bar mourning a recently lost colleague. He comes out of it paralyzed but in this case it's temporary and he ultimately regains his ability to walk, though not before a lot of angst and depression during the period where he doesn't know if it will come back. Hollywood Healing is in effect so it's rather fast.
  • Due to the Dead: The team holds their own private wake of sorts for their fallen comrade.
  • Enhance Button: The team gets one of the kidnappers' fingerprints off a video tape because the guy reached toward the camera to turn it off.
  • The Informant: Flack's C.I., Terrence Davis, returns and provides the detective with the name and address of one of the suspects in Angell's murder.
  • It's Personal: To avenge Angell, Flack takes out the unarmed cop killer.
  • Stepford Smiler: Flack, as he sits... utterly stunned... in the hospital hallway after having received the news of Angell's death.
  • Taking the Bullet: Danny throws himself on top of Lindsay to protect her during the last moments of the episode.
  • To Absent Friends: The team share a toast and memories at their "wake."
