"The Box" is the 9th episode of Season 5 and the 101st overall. It originally aired November 26, 2008.
The body of a young pregnant woman is found in a car as it is about to be demolished in a junkyard, but her baby is missing. Danny is floored by something Lindsay tells him.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Almost Holding Hands: The episode ends with the camera focusing on Danny & Lindsey's hands, the backs of which are not quite touching each other as they stand side by side watching the baby's grandparents meet him for the first time.
  • Baby Be Mine: The mother had planned on giving the baby up for adoption, but changes her mind. When the opportunity presents itself, the adoptive couple steal him.
  • Born from a Dead Woman: The potential adopters argue with the woman in their home and she gets pushed down the stairs. The husband realizes she's dead, but cuts the baby out of her and hides her body.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Danny recounts his backstory of being injured in the minors and having to give up his dreams of playing professional baseball.
  • Character Narrator: Danny tells the story of the case to someone offscreen for much of the episode.
  • Death by Falling Over: The husband shoves the young woman while they're arguing at the top of a staircase. He doesn't intend to kill her, but she looses her balance and falls, hitting her head on the way down, and dies.
  • Flashback B-Plot: The events Danny describes are shown as he's talking about them, while the main action is the processing of the evidence from the crime he's talking about as well as the recovery of the kidnapped baby.
  • Kill the Parent, Raise the Child: A young woman's body is found in a car, and it's quickly discovered that she was pregnant. Turns out she'd agreed to sell her baby to an infertile couple who couldn't adopt legally, but she'd changed her mind. When she told the couple she was keeping the baby, they confronted her and she fell down the stairs, hitting her head and dying. Realizing the baby could still be saved, but that an ambulance would take too long (and they wouldn't be allowed to adopt him anyway), the couple cut out the baby and dumped his mother's body so they could keep him. Ultimately subverted because the episode ends with the baby being given to his grandparents to raise.
  • LARP: Opens with a group of guys battling it out in a junkyard. Flack tells Stella they're LARPing. She's never heard of it so he explains.
Flack: LARP: Live Action Role Play. Once a month they get together and go all Gladiator on each other.
  • RPG Episode: The opening anyway. RPGers are seen battling in the junkyard, which they use as a post-apocalyptic playground.
  • Sword Sparks: Sparks fly as the RPG players' metal weapons strike each other and the vehicles in the junkyard.
  • Traumatic C-Section: After the young woman falls down the stairs, the husband grabs a large kitchen knife and delivers the baby himself since he figured an ambulance wouldn't be able to get there in time.
  • Unseen Audience: For at least two-thirds of the episode, Danny is shown sitting in a room with concrete block walls while narrating the events of the case to someone offscreen. Only after he's brought them up to speed is his audience revealed to be the parents of the victim of the week, and that the three of them are in a room in the precinct which viewers have never seen before.
