Recap / Burn Notice S 4 E 10 Hard Time

Go To

Michael goes to prison with the help of the FBI guys in order to help an old friend of Sam's, while Fiona tries to retrieve information Simon hid in a grave.

  • Artistic License – Chemistry: Simon's cache is boobytrapped with sodium, and the show says it will explode when exposed to the moisture in the air. Not true. Sodium will react with water to produce hydrogen gas, which will explode due to the heat released by the reaction, but expose it to air and it will just react with oxygen (quickly, too) to produce a coating of sodium oxide that will render the metal harmless. Even in Florida, there's not enough water in the air to produce an explosion.
  • As the Good Book Says...: Simon does this while questioned by Michael, as a prelude to breaking free of his handcuffs. He does it again while walking on the beach with him.
  • Asshole Victim: Sam reports that, after Cruz was arrested, the rest of La Naccíon found out he was stealing their money and were not happy about that. Suffice to say, neither Juan nor anyone else ever have to worry about Cruz again.
  • Batman Gambit: Simon breaks free of his handcuffs and knocks Michael out a window. He does this so that they'll be away from any listening devices when he tells Michael about his treasure trove. Of course, he's more than happy to sell all this by giving Mike a nasty cut.
  • Blackmail: George Hill is a prison guard working for Cruz. His little brother is in another prison that Cruz has some pull in, and he was warned to follow orders or else.
  • Call-Back: Michael is able to pull off his stay in a federal prison because Harris and Lane owe him a big favor.
  • Exact Words: After learning John Barrett has been pulling the strings, Vaughn says he is so happy to have found Michael. Having learned from the audio tape that Vaughn had a hand in burning him, Michael forces a smile and says he's certainly happy to have found him, too.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: George Hill first appears when looking the other way so Cruz can attack Michael and Juan in the cell, but he looks noticeably guilty while doing so. It's soon revealed that he's being blackmailed by Cruz.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Simon tells Michael of an audio tape dated 2007, saying he's really going to want to hear it. The series premiered in 2007, which should give viewers a clue why a burned spy would find it so interesting.
    • Simon refuses to tell Michael what exactly the Bible decodes, but he assures him that handing it over to Barrett will grant him his freedom.
  • Friendship Moment: Pointing out that Sam would be recognized if he tried to pose as a prisoner, Michael volunteers to go in instead.
Sam: You would do that for my friend?
Michael: I'd do that for you.
  • He Knows Too Much: During his stay in prison, Juan worked for Cruz and helped him skim some money off La Naccíon. With Juan a week away from getting released, Cruz wants him dead out of fear he'll start blabbing.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: When Sam questions why he would work for Cruz and help rip off La Naccíon's money, Juan said it was the only way to survive almost a decade in prison.
  • I Owe You My Life: Sam is determined to save Juan, who he says warned him of a bomb years ago during a mission in Venezuela. He was fully prepared to go into the prison himself to look out for him.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: After Cruz is knocked out in the infirmary, Sam quips, "I guess Cruz finally got a taste of his own medicine." Jesse just glares at him in response.
  • Noodle Incident: To dupe Cruz's outside muscle, Sam poses as a mere lawyer and chats up a guy walking out of a firm. The name Sam uses makes the guy think he's referring to a case about a man murdered over a parrot.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: On the beach, Simon says he and Michael are like brothers, due to how they've been used as tools for the Organization. Michael clearly doesn't like the comparison.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Michael when on the phone with Harris and being asked to describe the trouble going on.
  • Prison Riot: Cruz orchestrates one so that he can freely kill Michael and Juan, while the guards are distracted.
  • The Reveal:
    • The man looking for the bible is super-rich CEO John Barrett.
    • Vaughn was directly involved in the decision to have Michael burned.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Simon wears nothing but white in his meetings with Mike. He's not innocent, but he's pure. Pure violence, but pure. And he's offering Mike a form of rebirth.
  • Sadist: On the audio tape, Simon says he finished off some mooks rather quickly and messily, but he promises to take his time with Vaughn.
  • Soft Glass: In the middle of Mike's interrogation of Simon, the latter breaks his cuffs and throws them through a giant window.
  • Wham Line: While listening to the Berlin 2007 audio tape.
Simon: Whatever will you do without me?
Vaughn: Oh, we found a replacement. Very promising. Name's Westen.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Things were getting so desperate in prison that Michael felt there was no other choice but to break Juan out, but an ambush leaves Juan with a broken leg. With no way to get to the infirmary in time to meet up with Sam and Jesse, Michael changes strategy by subduing Cruz and breaking him out instead. An unconscious Cruz is dumped in a storage facility with a gun. By the time he comes to and steps outside, a number of cops are positioned and ordering him to surrender.
  • You Do Not Want To Know: Inverted. While escorting Michael out of prison, Harris and Lane list the various events of the last few days, such as the nasty prison riot and the guards who admitted to taking bribes. They wonder just what Michael had to do with all this, but when he asks if they really want to know, they say no.
