Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 5 E 20 Show Me Going

Go To

Show Me Going is the twentieth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's fifth season.

An active shooter situation arises in Brooklyn Heights and Rosa is among the first officers to respond. Although anxious and eager to rush over and help, the Nine-Nine is ordered to stay put and continue normal policing duties.

Jake decides to go against Holt and the NYPD commissioner's orders and find a way to sneak out of the precinct and head to the incident and enlists Charles, Hitchcock, and Scully's assistance to obtain tactical gear and to get out of the building without Holt's knowledge.

Terry, meanwhile, becomes reminded of his own mortality and calls his insurance company for a check-up so he can adjust his policy to better make sure his family will be taken care of in the event of his death. Unfortunately, his worrying about Rosa's safety causes Terry's blood pressure to rise abnormally high, causing even more stress as he begins worrying about how that will adversely affect his insurance.

Also, Amy and Gina try and have the detective squad's ladies' room toilet fixed for Rosa while she is out dealing with the shooter. After the plumber they call in for the repair turns out to be unhelpful, the two decide to try and fix it themselves. Hilarity Ensues.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Law: Detective Brett Booth's incredibly poor hand-eye coordination as a result of being blinded in one eye would not have allowed him to even graduate from the academy, much less continue attendance.
  • Assurance Backfire: Holt tries to allay Terry's fear of being killed on the job by telling him that he's more likely to be crushed by falling scaffolding or choking, which just worries Terry more.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Amy and Rosa's first scene seems to be setting up a plot about Amy and her new squad of uniformed officers with Rosa in a supporting role. After the Mood Whiplash it becomes a story about Amy and Gina trying to fix the upstairs toilet.
  • Call-Back: Gina's Holt soundboard from "DFW" is used in Jake's plan to borrow tactical gear and go save Rosa.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Inverted. Holt calls out Jake's desire to rush towards the active shooter incident and instead challenges the detective to help his fellow officers at the Nine-Nine emotionally.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength:
    • Terry is so tense with worry about Rosa that he crushes his computer mouse.
    • His heart is also strong enough to make his blood pressure so high it breaks the insurance agent's heart rate machine.
  • Do-It-Yourself Plumbing Project: Amy and Gina attempt to repair a toilet by themselves. Their botched attempt results in a pipe bursting and Amy then trashes the rest of the bathroom out of anger and frustration.
  • Exact Words: Jake tries to invoke this by telling Holt he Understands his orders.
  • Groin Attack: Hitchcock and Scully's fight quickly devolves into the two of them laying on the floor and punching each other in the groin.
Charles: Oh my God! They're in a penis punch 69!
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: The first thing on Rosa's mind after returning unharmed is getting a beer.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: No matter how Amy narrows her search, the only plumbing-related videos she can find are porn.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: In a somewhat meta sense, to the many action movies and T.V. shows that show cops in an active shooter situation. Instead of going into the danger, this episode focuses on the friends of the cop in danger and how it feels to worry about someone they want to help, but all they can do is wait.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode starts out normally, with the usual wacky antics being set up... and then the shooting happens, and suddenly the silly plots are dropped as the precinct reacts to the crisis as it unfolds.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Holt comes to work in a bright red bowler hat. Everything freezes because no one can comprehend what is happening.
    • Charles, usually a Shipper on Deck, barks at Jake for "flirting" with Amy, due to the stress of the active shooter situation.
  • Oh, Crap!: The whole squad is listening to the roster of responding officers to the active shooting situation on the scanner... and then they hear Rosa among them.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jake mentions The Fast and the Furious movies when talking about the street racers case.
Holt: Don't those movies glorify lawlessness?
Jake: No, they glorify family and loyalty and big hard boobs on both men and women.
    • Charles plans to go with Jake on the racing case dressed as Speed Racer.
    • When the pipe bursts on Amy, Gina imitates Steve Urkel saying "Did I do that?", then explains the reference to Amy.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Once she returns to the precinct, Rosa uses the stairs to prank her friends, who were expecting her to use the elevator.
  • Stunned Silence: In the Cold Open, Holt walks in wearing a bright red bowler hat. The normally busy room comes to a sudden stand still as Holt heads towards his office.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Jake is told the hotshot maverick cop he expects to lead this seminar shattered both his legs jumping off the Chrysler Building to catch a suspect. Jake notes "that is totally badass" and expects the guy to be back on the job in days only to be informed that the cop will never walk again.
    • Jake seems ready to go against Holt's orders and help Rosa only to come back to the station with food. Holt is happy he did so...because if Jake had gone against his captain's orders and stormed into an active shooter situation without authorization, he'd be kicked off the force.
    • A key reason why Holt is warning him is that while Jake may be a top investigator, he is not a trained tactical officer and doesn't know the methods and tactics the teams on scene are using. Couple that with his belief that he's going to be living out a real-life action movie and all Jake will do is make himself (and anyone around him) targets for the shooter. Even Jake has to accept this.
  • This Is Reality: Holt chides Jake for going to save Rosa alone, telling him that life is not like the action movies Jake watches where the hero defeats all the bad guys by himself.
  • Title Drop: Multiple officers are heard over the radio calling out "Show me going", which is how NYPD officers announce that they are responding to an emergency.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Averted. Jake's plan to defy Holt and get weapons from the armory to head out and help Rosa in a shooting crisis is described fully before being executed, and goes more-or-less as planned. Holt does catch on and finds Jake just before he heads out, but by that point Jake already had everything ready and only stopped because Holt talks him out of it.
  • The Watson: Gina is unfamiliar with the phrase "show me going", necessitating Holt to explain it to her and by extension the audience.
  • We Need a Distraction: Jake's plan involves having Scully and Hitchcock stage a fight to get Holt out of his office.
  • Wham Line: "Diaz, 3118, show me going."
