Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 4 E 02 Coral Palms Part Two

Go To

Coral Palms, Part 2 is the second episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's fourth season.

Jake and Holt continue their efforts to try and take down Jimmy Figgis on their own. Keeping their plans secret from Marshal Haas, they arm themselves in preparation for a final showdown against the vicious mob boss. Unfortunately, they hit a snag after running a stop sign and getting pulled over by a bumbling local sheriff who proves to be cannier than he appears.

Meanwhile, back in New York, the Nine-Nine receive a new captain in the form of Jason Stentley, a cheerfully incompetent cop who freely admits that he shouldn't have the job. Amy takes an immediate dislike to her new commander but the rest of the squad quickly come over to his side because of his willingness to indulge their whims.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: How Stentley got promoted to captain.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Sheriff Reynolds is a lazy cop with nowhere near the experience of Jake and Holt but his The Newlywed Game-inspired interrogation technique is very effective in catching the two in a lie.
  • Cassandra Truth: Jake and Holt finally confess to the Sheriff that they're NYPD cops on Witness Protection and need to get out to catch a mafia boss. The Sheriff just laughs.
  • Continuity Nod: Holt brings up the time Bob took him hostage and the Nine-Nine had to save him in "Greg and Larry."
  • Darker and Edgier: One of the show's darker episodes.
  • Darkest Hour: Figgis has found Jake and Holt and has captured their marshal, Jake and Holt become fugitives, and the Nine-Nine's new captain forbids the squad to fly down to Florida to help them.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Jake tries to justify breaking out of jail by saying that they're the good guys. Then he realizes "That's what they all think!"
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: After fighting so the Sheriff would go inside the cell fails, Jake gives Holt a long kiss on the lips, which angers the homophobic Sheriff enough to get inside and get trapped.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The squad gives Captain Stentley a pep talk to try and make him a more professional cop and not cave into their demands to try and make them happy. Unfortunately, the lesson gets through just when they need time off to go help Jake and Holt in Florida.
  • I Can't Do This by Myself: Holt and Jake tried to take Figgis down by themselves. Failing that, Jake wants to call the Nine-Nine for help but Holt resists because he's embarrassed by what happened to him in the previous season finale.
  • I Have This Friend: Marshal Haas is just pop-quizzing Jake on whether "Larry" would cheat on his long-term partner with a gorgeous young hunk he had instant chemistry with. That's all.
  • I Have Your Wife: Figgis has Marshal Haas.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Sheriff Reynolds learned his interrogation technique from The Newlywed Game. It is suprisingly effective.
  • Moral Myopia: Lampshaded when Jake and Holt become fugitives on the run from the law.
Jake: I can't believe we're fugitives on the lam, falsely accused of a crime.
Holt: There's nothing false about it. We committed several felonies and escaped from jail.
Jake: Yeah, but we were just doing what we had to do. We're the good guys! (suddenly surprised) This is what they all think!
  • Place Worse Than Death: How the show portrays the town in Florida, as a microcosm of the worst things about the U.S. After fretting about how to get ahold of firearms without being flagged by a background check, a shady gun store owner offers to sell them all the guns they want with no questions asked, then asks if they want ammo by the box or the bucket. The Sheriff is homophobic and misogynist, unable to fathom that the Marshall overseeing Holt and Jake's case is a woman.
Jake: [Under his breath] Our country is broken...
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Or Politically Incorrect Hero Antagonist Sheriff Reynolds is deeply sexist and homophobic, but he is doing his job to catch Jake and Holt after they were caught with a lot of guns.
  • Prison Episode: In a way. Jake and Holt were stuck in jail for the episode.
  • Spanner in the Works: Sheriff Reynolds is just smart enough to catch Jake and Holt lying and, as a result, completely destroy their plans.
  • Stereo Fibbing: Jake and Holt have to answer three questions from Sheriff Reynolds. The first question (what did they buy guns for) they both answer "hunting". For the second (What do they hunt) Holt answers "grouse and other small fowl" while Jake answers "deer". For the last question (Where were they going that was so important), Jake tries to cover up by scribbling gibberish and claiming that it was the same answer as Holt's.
  • Throwing the Distraction: Jake throws the glass eye of one of the prisoners at the coffee machine to get the remaining guard to leave.
  • Wham Line: "It's Figgis. I have your marshal and I'm coming for you. See you soon, Jake."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Amy finally snaps and delivers a biting one to the other members of the squad for selling out and putting their own selfish desires above the good of the precinct:
Amy: Listen, you selfish jerks! That guy in there? The one playing the bongos right now? He thinks we're killing it, so he's just staying out of our way. Well, the only reason we're killing it is because Captain Holt never let us be satisfied with ourselves. He always inspired us to work harder and smarter. To be better. And if he was here right now? He'd be ashamed of us.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Jake is convinced the oldest guy in the cell will be the most helpful to their escape, turns out he's a hopeless drug addict.
