How are you still alive?
I may very well not be.

The Ferris wheel episode. The two decide to go to the fair and ride the tallest and oldest Ferris wheel in western Europe, however the fair closes leaving them stranded on the top car. Eddie suggest getting drunk so they won't notice.

While Eddie is reading the paper he finds out that the Ferris wheel is a condemned deathtrap which is going to be blown up at 6am the next morning. With no one around to save them and the Ferris wheel collapsing, Eddie coverts to Buddhism in the hope of being reincarnated and as Claudia Schiffer. Richie goes against the idea and prays to God.

God actually comes to save them but they admit that they don't really believe in God. As a result, He disappears, and they fall to their deaths.

Tropes

  • Anger Born of Worry: When they realise the Ferris Wheel is due to be demolished the next morning, and their first attempt to attract a helicopter's attention fails, Richie suggests making a distress flare. Naturally, Eddie assumes he's referring to fashion statements. When this continues, Richie has to scream his head off to get Eddie too stop.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When the cart they're on starts to give way under them, Eddie and Richie list as many frightened remarks as they can think of.
    Richie: Oh, blimey!
    Eddie: My stars!
    Richie: Splice my sausages!
    Eddie: Cor lumey!
    Richie: Christmas pudding!
Eddie: (pause) Blood and stomach pills!
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode is just the two main characters (and, briefly, God) and takes place in real time in or around the Ferris wheel pod.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Eddie's disclaimer that they and the BBC support people believing whatever they like. He even looks down the camera and adds "Because we really don't want to get in the shit about this".
  • Bring Me My Brown Pants: The ghost train scared Eddie so much he was forced to abandon his soiled trousers for a skirt.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Richie and Eddie are saved from a Ferris Wheel by the hand of God. When they remember that they don't believe in God, the hand vanishes and they fall to their doom.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Beeped out, but not to the audience.
Eddie: You fucking well hit the clit right on the nail there, you cunting bastard.
  • Country Matters: As above.
  • Deus ex Machina: When they're trapped on a disintegrating ferris wheel, the hand of God comes down to save them. Then Eddie issues a disclaimer on behalf of The BBC before pointing out:
Eddie: ...we don't actually believe in God, do we?
    Richie: (disappointed) Tch. No.
Richie & Eddie: (to the camera) Shit!
    (hand disappears)
  • Divine Intervention: Parodied. Richie and Eddie are trapped on a condemned Ferris wheel and end up hanging by their fingers as their car slowly disintegrates. They pray for a miracle; God's hand appears miraculously. However, once safely on the divine hand, then they both start commenting how they don't actually want to cause offence or anything, but they don't believe in God. Accordingly, the hand disappears.
  • Foreshadowing: When the episode opens, the Ferris Wheel is rusted all over, and you can hear a few too many creaking sounds as it moves slowly.
  • Fun with Homophones: The police helicopter can't see them.
Richie: If only we had some flares!
Eddie: You're making fashion statements? We're going to be blown up at dawn!
    Richie: I mean distress flares!
Eddie: Like the kind Suzi Quatro used to wear?
  • Gargle Blaster: Eddie's bottle of brandy, meths, Pernod, paint stripper, Mr Sheen, brake fluid and Drambuienote .
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Eddie and Richie let off some non-profanities when hanging from the wheel.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Saved from death until God's hand vanishes.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Eddie engages in this when the cart of the Ferris wheel they're in starts to fall apart.
  • Puff of Logic: The duo are trapped on a Ferris wheel that's due to be demolished. The Hand of God Himself appears to offer them a lift, but disappears when they admit that they're both atheists.
