Tropes

  • Artistic License – Economics, History, and Politics: The show's portrayal of Cuba is typical of American media, presenting it as a dictatorial hell-hole that decent people want to escape. The truth is more complicated, as much of the suffering in Cuba is due to the US embargo that almost completely isolates it from the world. There are also inconsistencies in the stories Fuentes tells, such as how unlikely it is that a man whose uncle was sent to prison for selling Die Hard DVDs and a father imprisoned multiple times for opposing the government would be unlikely to rise to a prominent position like chief coroner for a tyrannical nation. However, those same inconsistencies also mean we can grant the writers some grace; perhaps Fuentes remembered the wealth Cuba possessed before the fall of the Soviet Union, when he was a young man, and resented not having that wealth as a grown man and defected out of greed. In that light his stories would be exaggerations and an attempt to overhype his desire to be American.
    • Cuba is likewise no more an atheist nation than the is the US. The stereotype of communism as aggressively atheist is more than a century out of date.
  • As You Know: Hodgins explains Fuentes's own culture to him about ropa vieja.
  • Latin Lover: Fuentes hits on all the women in the lab aggressively. Angela appreciates how hot he is.
