A famous chess master's remains are found in pig slop, requiring Sweets to tap into forgotten skills and go undercover in a chess club to investigate. Meanwhile, Cam accepts an award (albeit with conditions attached) and Dr. Douglas Filmore, a Canadian forensic podiatrist, returns to serve as the case's intern.

Tropes

  • The Ace: Turns out Sweets is nearly a Grand Master in chess. We get a montage of Sweets beating a dozen other chess players.
  • Broken Ace: The kid who refuses to beat Sweets is also a Grand Master, but has some serious issues, even worse than Sweets.
  • The Bus Came Back: Fillmore, the Canadian forensic podiatrist, returns to help the team solve a murder where the victim was Fed to Pigs.
  • Drinking Game: Booth makes one out of Happy Hideaway, a children's board-game for three-year-olds. It gets him out of playing chess with Brennan, who considers calling the knights "horseys" to be bad game strategy.
  • Fed to Pigs: Albert Magnusen. Hodgins’ filter machine ends up malfunctioning and spewing the contents of the pig through all over Recurring Character Dr. Fillmore, the unfortunate intern of the week.
  • Meaningful Name: Chess prodigies Magnusen are clearly named for Magnus Carlsen.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Sweets has two doctorates and is a whiz at the game. Turns out, Brennan is also a fan of the history of the sport.
