Tropes

  • Artistic License – Religion: The victim is a polygamous Mormon, implied to be a member of the offshoot branch, the FLDS, fundamentalists. First, FLDS Mormons are few in number, live in a few isolated locations, and tend to be cultish and secretive. Second, although the LDS church officially banned polygamy in 1904 (the FLDS formed in large part out of opposition to this) and will excommunicate anyone found to be practicing it, there are a lot of single mothers living next door to families they're very intimate with in Mormon communities and no one looks into it that closely. Ed living openly with three women is an anomaly because that wouldn't happen outside of those isolated, cult-like communities.
  • Open Relationship Failure: The Body of the Week is the husband in a polygamous marriage to three sisters. Although the investigation encounters plenty of drama around this marriage, including a fundamentalist neighbor and a fourth woman on the side, the murderer turns out to be the wives' father, who killed their husband for cheating on them.
  • Papa Wolf: The victim was in a polygamous marriage with three sisters, and cheated on them with yet another woman, so their protective father killed him.
