Recap / Bones S 5 E 3 The Plain In The Prodigy

Go To

The remains of an teenaged Amish boy are discovered after he discovered two months prior to Rumspringa, the traditional Amish time where he would explore the outside world. Later, they discover that he was a secret piano prodigy that kept his talents a secret from his family for fear of judgement. Meanwhile, Cam deals with parenting issues as she believes her stepdaughter Michelle might be having sex, leading Booth to help out.

Tropes

  • Artistic License – Religion: Rumspringa isn't a formal thing where kids are sent out into the world to decide what they're going to do; it's just a term for adolescence, recognizing that teens are likely to act out and they're given the freedom to do so.
  • Crippling the Competition: Levi, the Victim of the Week, had done this to himself shortly before he was killed: he slammed his right hand with a desk drawer to break it, in order to remove the temptation of going to a music school to study piano.
  • Crushing Handshake: Booth meets Cam's step-daughter's new boyfriend. After greeting him enthusiastically, Booth throws in some not-very-veiled threats about treating the girl right, including mentioning that he used to be a sniper, and finishes off with a handshake that leaves the kid wincing and rubbing his hand.
  • Twerp Sweating: Booth intimidates Cam's daughter's boyfriend.
