Recap / Bojack Horseman S3 E09: "Best Thing That Ever Happened"

Go To

Upset with Princess Carolyn for losing two movie offers, including ruining his chances of reconciling with Kelsey, BoJack is ready to fire her as his agent. Princess Carolyn tries to defend her case over dinner.

Tropes:

  • Arc Words: The episode title refers to both BoJack and Princess Carolyn dropping this line whenever something bad happens, hoping to find some silver lining from it.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: BoJack has admits that he does love Princess Carolyn in as much as he can love anyone, but even that is not enough to keep him from cutting ties with her.
  • Becoming the Mask: The donkey lady fully embraces her role as a waiter.
  • Bottle Episode: Set entirely at Elephante's save for the Cold Open in 2007 and a brief trip in Princess Carolyn's car, and even two of the guest characters are voiced by the regular cast.
  • Call-Back: The title is one to "Say Anything", where BoJack keeps calling P.C. whenever he does something stupid.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: This episode fleshes out Princess Carolyn's need to rescue other people when she can't rescue herself.
  • Continuity Nod: The titular phrase also appeared in the episode "Say Anything" with similiar results.
  • Eye Take: Princess Carolyn does this when her name comes up during a radio song.
  • Foreshadowing: A minor case, but when Princess Carolyn returns to make the Mushroom Risotto, BoJack obliges, but states that "This isn't one of those things where you save my ass so that I feel obligated to give you your job back." Sure enough, the episode ends with BoJack once again stating that no, he isn't giving her back the job.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: BoJack's recollection of his and Princess Carolyn's first meeting was actually their third meeting. Their first was when P. C. went to his house to deliver a script and the second was when she tried to greet him after a shooting of Horsin' Around.
  • Freudian Excuse: Princess Carolyn's mother was constantly missing work drunk, leaving Princess Carolyn to have to try and keep things running if she wanted to keep a home, giving her an obsession with trying to fix problem cases like BoJack.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Princess Carolyn calls out BoJack for frequently being more interested in hearing "one mean thing" over the "ten nice things" that can overpower it. In her own words, a "self-hating masochist".
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: BoJack is in no position for calling out Princess Carolyn's screw-ups that cost him three TV/movie roles at once, since he had his own share of screw-ups that got him in trouble more than once. That said, none of her screw-ups from last episode were his fault.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: While Princess Carolyn is trying to appeal to BoJack to rehire her, she mentions that almost everyone else she worked with begged her to drop him as a client, and lists off various things they said about him. BoJack is calm as she lists them off, until she gets to the last one, which is that one of them called him "Too portly for TV."
  • Insignificant Anniversary: BoJack goes out to dinner with his agent and ex-girlfriend Princess Carolyn, intending to fire her for losing him roles. Knowing she's about to be fired, Princess Carolyn hastily gets the waiters to bring out a cake and celebrate how she and BoJack have been working together for twenty-three years. BoJack doesn't change his mind about firing her.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: PC accuses BoJack of wanting a mother figure who will fix his mistakes, but who is also sexually available. Far from being offended, BoJack is mainly upset that the combination rarely includes professionalism: "A sex-mommy who also keeps her boundaries - is that too much to ask?".
  • Malaproper: Sandro mistakes sweating bullets for "sweating bull's nets" and even lampshades it in his exit speech.
  • Mood Whiplash: Princess Carolyn's conversation about her need to put out fires is abruptly cut short by the waiter actually being on fire.
  • Next Stall Shenanigans: A variation. Princess Carolyn keeps giving herself pep talks in the restaurant bathroom mirror, and a Running Gag is that a woman in a nearby stall keeps asking her what's going on, thinking that she's watching a movie or something. Princess Carolyn gets concerned for why the woman's been on the toilet for so long, and the woman assures her that she "got up and came back later."
  • Non-Indicative Name: For an episode with an uplifting title like "Best Thing That Ever Happened," it is one that is widely considered among the most harrowing up to that point in the third season.
  • Poor Communication Kills: BoJack bluntly fires PC, but Sandro, the restaurant's head waiter who is close by, believes he's the one getting fired and makes a mess of the place in protest. When BoJack actually fires him for his behavior, Sandro storms out, taking almost the entire staff with him.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Princess Carolyn reaches this when BoJack tells her that he respects Ana's opinions but not her's.
  • Rags to Riches: Princess Carolyn reveals that she was the daughter of a maid. BoJack lampshades this.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: BoJack does this while trying to make his exit. Also, somehow his index cards for his firing speech get mixed up with his proposed jokes for the Comedy Central Roast of January Jones.
BoJack: "Our relationship no longer has any professional integrity, so it's gotta end. Stand to leave. Oh, shouldn't have read that part. When you reflect on this, you'll see it's best for both of us. Exit restaurant. Goddamn it."
  • Straw Critic: BoJack views all critics like this when he hears that a food critic is at his restaurant. Although the critic loves the food, she has to give it a low rating for all the chaos that happened. It later turns out she runs an obscure tumblr blog with a billion star rating system, meaning her words matter squat.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • The waiter was on fire for a considerable amount of time and he explains that he needs to be rushed to a hospital.
    • The Food Critic ultimately ends up having to give the restaurant a low score due to all the chaos despite liking Princess Carolyn's dish. It doesn't matter though since she just runs a poorly designed tumblr blog with no attention.
    • Despite being genuinely thankful to her and affirming that he loves her as much as he's capable of loving anyone, the episode still ends with BoJack refusing to give Princess Carolyn her job back. Friend or no, Princess screwed up badly and lost BoJack three major acting opportunities that he'll never get back. Breaches in trust like this and the need to maintain a professional relationship is part of the reason why trying to do business with friends is generally not recommended.
  • Suspiciously Apropos Music: The song "Keep Driving" plays as Princess Carolyn leaves the restaurant.
Song: Keep drivin', keep drivin'/Girl don't turn that car around
Break your pattern of needin' to fix other people/Just keep on drivin' away~~!
Princess Carolyn: Ugh, who do they write these songs for?
Song: Don't go back to the restaurant Princess Carolyn/Just keep driving away!
  • Title Drop: P. C. does this a few times throughout the episode.
  • Wham Line:
Princess Carolyn: I promise, I'll never ask anything of you again, but please, give me six months. [...] So? What do you think?
    BoJack: No.

January Jones Roast

When BoJack fires Princess Carolyn once and for all, he reads his speech off a set of cue cards, not realizing until too late that some inappropriate and unrelated cards have been mixed in.

How well does it match the trope?
