Recap / Bojack Horseman S 2 E 10 Yes, And...

Go To

Todd gets sucked into the cult of improv comedy. Wanda thinks Diane is a bad influence on BoJack when he has to deal with a career crisis.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Decay: The direction of Kelsey's replacement, Abe, moves Secretariat's original format further and further away since the end of last episode. Bear in mind that this began even before Kelsey was fired last episode because the studio wanted a more lighthearted vision of the movie.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: "When's the last time you were actually happy?" hits BoJack so hard it motivates him to leave town for the answer: With Charlotte.
  • Answer Cut: At the end of the episode, Abe is angrily pacing around the filming set, asking where BoJack is when he doesn't show up. Cut to "Our Deer Friend" store in New Mexico, which is headed by Charlotte, an old friend of BoJack's.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: BoJack learned all about cults from his time in the Church of Happyology... because while he was there he happened to read a book on the subject.
  • Church of Happyology: Zig-zagged, while Shenanigags is an obvious parody of the real organization, the real one gets namedropped a lot.
  • Exact Words: Abe, the new director, says, "So we ain't doin' Casablanca." BoJack interprets this as Abe accepting that this isn't the best movie. But later, he states that this isn't Casablanca because Casablanca was about a club owner named Rick, and they are doing a movie about Secretariat, a racehorse. And this bites BoJack in the ass when they end up doing a ton of reshoots out of spite.
  • Lame Rhyme Dodge: When at Abe's house for dinner, BoJack insults the movie, offending Abe. Wanda tries to cover for him with this trope, but it doesn't work.
BoJack: I have got to say, it has been a really painless shoot, even though the movie's gonna be a piece of shit. Am I right?
    Abe: (shocked) What?
Wanda: Oh, you said "piece of ship," right? Like shipshape? (chuckles fakely) Anyway, what were we talking about? Who knows? Okay, moving on.
    Abe: (angrily slurps his drink)
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • After insulting Abe's version of the movie and his wife's cooking, Abe decides to make BoJack miserable by forcing him into multiple takes during filming.
    • BoJack's argument with Wanda, as well as blaming executives like her for ruining his life, near the end severs their relationship.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: BoJack heavily denies that he's talking about Happyology when talking about cults likely to try to avoid any lawsuits from the infamous real life church.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Diane staying at BoJack's house brings out the worst in her.
