Recap / Bojack Horseman S 1 E 12 Later

Go To

Three months after his memoir is released, BoJack is being considered for a role that is his lifelong dream. BoJack discovers that while the book may have resurrected his career, it also might have ended all of his personal relationships. Meanwhile, Todd and Mr. Peanutbutter make plans for questionable new business ventures.

"Later" contains examples of:

  • Attention Deficit... Oh, Shiny!: The ideas that Todd and Mr. PB come up with actually seem to catch on with the public, but they never actually take it beyond the first steps because they keep getting distracted by more ideas.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: "Vincent" made it sound like he was going to tell Princess Carolyn that he's actually a kid, but instead he says "I love you", much to BoJack's frustration.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Todd and Mr. PB got rid of the floorboards of their Halloween store, where it'll cut away to an unsuspecting person stepping inside and falling. This ends up helping BoJack get the role of the Secretariat as the first choice for the role, Andrew Garfield, got injured when he went in.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: BoJack tells Diane he really wanted her to like him. All Diane has to say is, "I know".
  • Don't Explain the Joke: In BoJack's letter to Secretariat that is read out loud on the Dick Cavett Show, he mentions how he wants to "get on the right track." There is a long desperate add-on to this message, asking Secretariat if he got the joke because he's a horse who does field tracks.
Secretariat: Should I write him back and tell him I get it?
  • Driven to Suicide: A flashback reveals that BoJack's hero, Secretariat, was trying to fight allegations of him betting on his own races. A month later, he jumps off a bridge to his death after losing the legal battle and being banned for life from horse-racing.
  • Literal Metaphor: BoJack complains how Todd and Peanutbutter's ideas are really bad by saying they don't have any ground floor. Then we cut to the Halloween in January store while another customer falls to the basement due to the store's literal lack of a ground floor.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Todd and Mr. PB come up with a new idea: Smoodies, a mood you drink like a smoothie. BoJack is horribly confused when they pitch it to him.
BoJack: I don't understand; how do you drink a mood?
    PB: Like a smoothie!
BoJack: So it is a smoothie?
Todd: No. It's a Smoodie. A mood you that you drink.
BoJack: How do you drink a mood?
    PB: Like. A. Smoothie.
BoJack: But, do you buy it in a store? I mean, what are the physical attributes?!
  • Noodle Incident: Evidently, the last time BoJack was at the Golden Globes was in 1992. He was kicked out for getting into a fist fight with Sir Paul McCartney.
  • Rule of Three: Throughout the episode, we see three people fall victim to the Halloween in January store.
  • Running Gag: People getting hurt as a result of Todd and Mr. PB's "Halloween in January" store not having a floor.
  • Tastes Like Purple: PB and Todd start up a business known as "Smoodies", described as a mood you drink like a smoothie... whatever the Hell that means.
  • Title Drop: By Princess Carolyn, Diane, and BoJack.
