Recap / Bob's Burgers S8E19 "Mo Mommy, Mo Problems"

Go To

On her "Momnipotent" Mother's Day, Linda and the rest of the Belchers get wrapped up in a bizarre real estate situation.

Mo Mommy, Mo Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: When the other buyer says he has a sword collection, Bob makes up a fib about how he used to collect swords too before moving onto collecting spears.
  • Big Eater: Linda has a lot to eat during the trips to each house.
  • Bloody Horror: Played for Laughs. Ethel has collected a bucket of squirrel blood from her taxidermy specimens, planning to use it someday. She douses herself with it and pours most of it down the stairs in an attempt to scare away buyers. Unfortunately, they are more grossed out than scared.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: During their tour of the houses the family is pretending to buy so that Linda can gorge herself on free food and pretend to be rich, she tells the kids to run upstairs to check out the rooms so that they seem more believable. When they get to Spencer's house, the kids have the following to comment on the rooms they picked:
Tina: There's a bathtub in my room!
Louise: There's a swing in mine!
Gene: There's a swing OVER a bathtub in this one! I don't know if it's a sex thing or a handicapped thing, but it works either way!
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Spencer asks if the Belchers are lying to get free food, Bob attempts to word it in a way that avoids calling it lying but is basically the same thing. He gives up and bluntly admits that yes, they're lying.
  • Holiday Episode: The second Mother's Day episode of the series.
  • It's All About Me: Invoked; Linda's plan for this Mother's Day is that the rest of the Belchers can't refuse any of her requests, no matter what.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Spencer is a bit of a tool. But he's also legitimately concerned about his elderly mom living in a house with so many stairs.
  • Just Here for the Free Snacks: Linda's wish for Mother's Day is to go to the open houses and pretend to be a prospective buyer, then gorge on the free food spreads. Things do not go according to plan.
  • Madwoman in the Attic: Spencer warns the Belchers not to go into the third floor, and then the kids hear someone say "Leave!" from there. They go inside and discover Spencer's mom Ethel. She is not locked in, however; she just doesn't want the house being sold and is trying to scare away buyers.
  • Orgasmically Delicious: Linda makes some interesting noises while eating shrimp at the first open house, which Bob points out and is clearly uncomfortable with.
  • Saying Too Much:
    • While talking to Julia, Linda accidentally implies that she doesn't live on King's Head Island like she's been saying, nearly exposing the plan to get free snacks. She barely salvages it.
    • Ethel's squirrel blood shenanigans and Linda confessing the Belchers' lie about being potential buyers already makes Kyle and Claire reconsider buying the house, but it was potentially salvageable. Then Spencer proceeds to mention several other issues with the house (such as exposed wiring being a potential fire hazard) that makes them demand a significant price drop in order for them to consider buying it.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Spencer's plan to get the Belchers to increase the house's selling price fails when the buyers demand a price reduction of $100,000 if they're going to buy it after the hijinks of the episode.
  • A Simple Plan: All Linda wanted was to go to open houses for the food spreads, but she gets too involved with one of the realtors and it all goes downhill from there.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When the kids learn that Ethel stuffs squirrels that infest her home, they ask her if she really found so many dead squirrels in her house. Ethel awkwardly confirms it, saying they all died of natural causes.
  • Taxidermy Terror: Ethel has made dioramas out of stuffed squirrels, using as specimens the ones that infest the house. Gene and Louise find them fascinating, but Tina is disgusted, especially when she sees Ethel skin one "like a Fruit Roll-up".
  • Tempting Fate: At the old house, Bob thinks they can keep pretending to be house buyers since no one there knows who they are. The owner turns out to be Spencer, the guy Bob told about their scheme over at the ferry. Fortunately, he decides to play along in order to get a higher bid from the real buyers.
