Recap / Bob's Burgers S 8 E 13 "Cheer Up, Sleepy Gene"

Go To

Gene attends a disastrous sleepover with a new friend, while Bob and Linda compete to see who is the worse snorer.

Tropes:

  • Awkward First Sleepover: Gene's first sleepover is with Alex, and it predictably doesn't go to plan. Gene is already terrified of sleeping at another person's house, and things just get more awkward from there.
  • Big Eater: Alex happens to have this in common with Gene, which causes problems when his mother places him on a no-sugar diet.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Gene reacts in this manner when Alex tells him he's running away from home.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gene and Alex. In particular, both hate gym class (and physical activity in general), both are Big Eaters, and both understand obscure movie references.
  • Cue the Rain: After Gene arrives at Alex's shelter and he realises how badly the sleepover is going, then Alex's shelter falls apart in the rain.
  • Did Not Think This Through:
    • Alex’s shelter in the woods is mostly made of garbage bags, and his meager rations would not last him a month like he claimed they would. In fact, the shelter falls apart in the rain moments later.
    • Bob and Linda's plan to prove the other is the worse snorer doesn't work because they can't figure out who's making what sounds on the tape. All it does is make them realize they're gross.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper: Alex and Gene have to go through a lot of trouble to avoid waking Alex's parents as they sneak out (and later, in), including climbing over the banister to avoid a creaky step and feeding the dog to keep it from barking.
  • Gasshole: Along with their loud snoring, the tape records Bob and Linda farting in their sleep. Bob even says they are both disgusting.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Tina is noticeably disappointed to learn that Donut is Alex's dog and not his older brother.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Bob and Linda constantly make puns with "snore" in them during their little competition.
  • Hypocrite: When Alex and Gene sneak back home, they catch his sugar-banning mom gorging on ice cream.
  • Momma's Boy: Linda kisses Gene before he goes to the sleepover, where it's revealed he carries her maxi-pads around to keep himself calm. At Alex's house he mildly freaks out when Alex's mom blows him a kiss because she's not his mom. When he returns home, Linda reassures him he never has to sleep outside their house again, even when he graduates college.
  • No Indoor Voice: Alex has to tell Gene to whisper as they sneak down the stairs.
  • Playing Sick: In a variation, Gene teaches Alex how to fake retch so the coach thinks they're about to throw up, which he can't stand. Alex remarks that he'll try the same thing at math class.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: It references a line from The Monkees' song "Daydream Believer".
  • The Runaway: Alex runs away from home because he’s tired of his parents putting him on a diet, and takes a reluctant Gene along with him.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Slumber Party: When Tina tells Gene about sleepovers, her description of them sounds more akin to this trope.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Since they're not using a video to record themselves, Bob and Linda have no way of figuring out who snores the most from the audio tape. As creepy as the idea was, at least Teddy would have visibly verified the source.
    • Alex is dismayed to find out that lockpicking is a fairly lengthy process (at least, lengthier than he's used to in movies).
  • Sweet Tooth: Alex has been put on a no-sugar diet. At the shelter, he rebels by eating sugar packets and gets a sugar rush, finally crashing as they sneak back inside.
  • The Unreveal: We never learn whether Bob or Linda snores more. We get a clip of both of them snoring equally, but the audio recording doesn't make it clear as to if that remains the case. At the end, both Bob and Linda are content to leave this a mystery.
