Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E13 "Mazel-Tina"

Go To

Despite not being invited to Tammy's bat mitzvah, Tina winds up in attendance when the Belchers are invited to cater. When Louise and Tammy go missing, Tina takes the opportunity to enjoy the party and quickly becomes the center of attention—meanwhile, Bob and Linda sneak off to enjoy the food, leaving Gene to manage the Belchers' food station solo (to disastrous results).

Mazel-Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Tina finally notices the guacamole coming out of the papier-mache Tammy's nose, she admits it's a good prank. Louise thanks her for it.
  • Asshole Victim: Tammy being locked in her own centerpiece for the entirety of her party, forced to watch as Tina steals her spotlight, is oh-so-very-deserved after all the crap she's done.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Per Tammy's wishes, Tina keeps to the schedule no matter what. This includes when Tammy goes missing, resulting in Tammy missing a majority of her own party.
  • Blatant Lies: Bob, clearly holding back utter contempt, calls Tammy a wonderful little girl. Tammy seems to genuinely believe him.
    • Linda tries to claim she needs some air. Bob notes that she's been saying "crepe" under her breath for ten minutes, and isn't fooling anyone with her true desire to get food. Linda continues denying it even as she continues to say "crepe" under her breath. Bob eventually gives up and lets her run off.
  • Bridezilla: A variant, Louise calls Tammy a "Bat-zilla" for being such a bossy control freak at her bat mitzvah.
  • Call-Back: The hotel where Tammy's party is happening is the same that hosted the tablescaping competition in "Boyz 4 Now."
  • Control Freak: Tammy. Later, when Tammy goes missing, Tina keeps the party on-schedule no matter what, and the power goes to her head.
  • Drunk with Power: Tina, who chooses to keep Louise and Tammy in the head instead of releasing them in order to keep having the party to herself.
Tina: (in response to a band member trying to take a break) But it's time for me to lead the Macarena. So hey, Macarena or hey, you're fired.
  • Fake Static: Tina badly fakes static when pretending not to hear Tammy and Louise (who are stuck in a giant replica of Tammy's head), and Louise calls her out on it.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Tina introduces Tammy's family, one can see her reading from what appears to be a family tree.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Tammy and Tina both use the term "BFOS" (pronounced "beefos") which stands for "Boys From Other Schools".
  • Hearing Voices: Janet, who believes Louise is actually a voice in her head. It helps that Louise goes along with that explanation.
  • Hidden Depths: Tina knows a lot about bat mitzvahs.
  • Ignored Aesop: It seems like Tammy's going to use the realization that nobody cares she's gone to improve her attitude and become a better person, but then she snaps back to her usual Alpha Bitch self once she realizes Louise fixed the headset and can thus contact help.
  • Ignored Expert: Bob tells Tina that being a caterer at the bat mitzvah means she won't actually get to enjoy it, she'll have to be constantly working. And indeed, had Tammy not roped Tina into being the party planner, she would have been stuck watching an awesome party she couldn't have participated in.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Tammy breaks down sobbing when she finally realizes how much happier everyone is without her.
  • Informed Judaism: This is the first and only episode to hint that Tammy is Jewish, and even then very little about her faith is shown besides the bat mitzvah itself (though she apparently has her rabbi's phone number).
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When Tammy complains that the Belchers not getting the themed toothpicks with which to garnish their food was "almost a major catastrophe", it leads to this exchange:
Bob: Um, you're kind of exaggerating, Tammy.
    Tammy: I'm exaggerating?!
Bob: Yeah, I think so. A little bit.
Tammy: That is literally the stupidest thing that anyone has said in the history of mankind, ever!
  • It's All About Me: While it is Tammy's Bat Mitzvah, she goes overboard by theming literally everything about herself.
  • Jerkass Ball: While Tina being willing to keep Tammy stuck in her centerpiece is very well-deserved, it crosses the line to a bit mean-spirited when she learns Louise is stuck with Tammy and yet continues to ignore the situation. Even before then, she's demanding of her family to cater at the party, even though it's for the demanding, bratty Tammy, and once she essentially gets de facto control of the bar mitzvah, refuses to let the performers take a break.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Louise seems about ready to warn Tina once the headset is up again, thus allowing Tammy to rejoin her party, but then Tammy just had to go mock Tina, causing Louise to keep Tammy locked up for a while longer.
  • Lethal Chef: When Gene is left alone in charge of the food station, he begins serving raw meat. When Zeke calls him out on it, he tells Zeke to run it under hot water (which, funnily enough, Zeke actually agrees to do).
  • Malevolent Mugshot: The centerpiece of Tammy's bat mitzvah is a giant papier-mâché bust of herself. Louise and Tammy end up trapped inside it when it gets hoisted up to the ceiling.
  • Noodle Incident: According to Louise, Tina once thought Hannukah was Han Solo and Chewbacca's baby.
    • A student named Shauna Glasman also had a Bat Mitzvah, which Louise and Gene are implied to have gone to—but not Tina.
  • Nose Nuggets: Louise brings a bowl of guacamole to the inside of the giant Tammy head, planning to pour it out of her nose. After she and Tammy get trapped, Louise goes ahead with it in the hope that someone will notice the dripping guacamole and let them down. Unfortunately, the guacamole is blocked by the head's oversized lips.
  • Not So Above It All: Bob warns Linda and Gene not to sneak off for refreshments. While looking for napkins, Bob ends up getting seduced by all the refreshments and joins Linda in wandering off.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Up until Tammy goes missing, Tina is the only Belcher to enjoy the bat mitzvah. Bob and Louise clearly don't want to be there, while Linda and Gene seem to just be going along with it for Tina's sake.
    • Inverted after Tammy goes missing. While Louise continues to not have fun (considering she's stuck with Tammy), Bob and Linda have much more fun after sneaking off to eat the refreshments, Gene is clearly enjoying himself at the catering table (even if he's not good at it), and Tina has the time of her life at the party.
  • Pet the Dog: Louise decides to let Tina enjoy the party rather alert her to Tammy's location.
    • Earlier, Louise coaxes Janet into quitting her party-planning job and pursuing her dreams on Broadway.
  • Sarcasm Mode: The only way Bob could be more sarcastic when calling Tammy a wonderful girl is if he rolled his eyes while doing it.
  • Schedule Fanatic: Tina becomes one after taking over coordinator duties. When Tammy goes missing, she fills in for her to keep the party on schedule, but she soon becomes the center of attention because of it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Between Tammy's bossiness and Louise's coaxing, Janet the party coordinator decides she's had enough and quits on the spot, forcing Tina to fill in.
    • When Tammy finally gets free, the Belchers decide it's a good time to leave—between Gene's poor management of their food station and Tina pissing off Tammy, Linda notes that they'd likely be chased out if they didn't turn tail immediately.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Tina compares the bat mitzvah to a religious experience... which it already is.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The van in the opening sequence is from Stuart-a-Little-Less Exterminators.
    • Gene mentions reading (and disliking) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
    • When Tina's face gets all red, Gene calls her One Luftballon, referring to the song "99 Luftballons" by Nena (released in English as "99 Red Balloons").
    • Tammy's introductory video is a parody of Blossom.
    • Linda compares the sudden change in their surroundings to The Shining.
    • Louise compares Tammy's situation to an inverted It's a Wonderful Life, claiming she gets to watch how much better off everyone is without Tammy bossing everyone around.
  • Spoiled Brat: Tammy goes to insane levels this episode, screaming at her mother and her rabbi in order to make her bat mitzvah the event of the day. It seems that not even their parents can stand her for too long.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: Louise tells Bob that she just wants a gift certificate for her bat mitzvah. When Bob points out that she's not getting a bat mitzvah (because the Belchers aren't Jewish), Louise says "I know. Because I'm getting a gift certificate."
  • Tempting Fate: Tina claims Bob will be enthusiastic about catering to Tammy's bat mitzvah. Cut to Bob firmly saying no.
    • Bob claims that Gene is holding down the Belchers' catering table just fine. He is not.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Louise tries to claim Bob is a horrible chef so that he doesn't get hired for Tammy's bat mitzvah—thus meaning she doesn't have to go either. When Tammy hires the Belchers anyways, her reaction makes it clear she's dreading every bit of it.
  • Too Much Information: Without being prompted, Gene reveals that he's uncircumcised.
  • Verbal Backspace: Bob says his usual "Gene" when Gene makes a quip after Bob's pep talk, only to take it back when he realizes that what Gene said was actually a fairly sweet comment about how soulful Bob's eyes are.
    Bob: Wait, really?
  • Wedding Smashers: Bob and Linda accidentally stumble into a wedding while sampling all the food stations at Tammy's bat mitzvah.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Louise literally says, "What the hell, Tina?!" before laying into her sister for not rescuing her and Tammy from the pinata once Louise calls her for help.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Tammy does this to Tina when she's finally freed.
