Recap / Bobs Burgers S 14 E 3 The Pickleorette

Go To

Bob and Linda help Gretchen throw her sister's bachelorette party; Tina forces Gene and Louise to play a board game they find on the street.

Tropes:

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Jen pronounces "calculator" all weird.
  • Black Comedy Pet Death: Tina inadvertently kills a lot of pets via bad luck in the "Veterinarian" board game, which Louise and Gene bluntly use as joke fodder.
  • Born Unlucky: Tina is riddled with so much awful bad luck at the board game. Worse, a lot of the bad outcomes involve animals dying/getting killed.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tina doesn't have a good time in this episode. First she ends up losing at a board game she found which only she wanted to play, then she's left realizing male strippers are in the restaurant but her hiding spot in the crawl space makes it impossible to see anything like she hoped.
  • Call-Back:
    • Bob and Linda's "in" with the off duty strippers from Pickles is that they know Jen's Hot Cousin Dave (who isn't actually considered that good looking by his co-workers).
    • Linda and Gayle referencing the time the latter tried to steal Bob appears to be referring to the events of "Dr. Yap".
  • Cool Big Sis: Justine doesn't let Gretchen's screw-ups change how she feels about her, assuring her she's always been a good older sister.
  • Cool Old Lady: Ms. Baker, Justine's 3rd grade teacher, turns out to be quite the life of the party.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Gretchen's handling of Justine's bachelorette party was a disaster because she didn't plan ahead on anything. She didn't schedule a limo ahead of time, she didn't call to make sure Pickles would be open that night, and she didn't double check to ensure everyone got their invitations until the very night of the party. She didn't even notice that no one replied back, which should've alerted her to the possibility that the invites weren't sent out.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The fact no one replied to her invitations was a pretty big red flag that Gretchen never sent them out, but she didn't look until hours before the party.
  • From Bad to Worse:
    • The aforementioned list of screw ups Gretchen didn't prepare for.
    • Tina's horrendous luck at "Veterinarian," leading to trying to spy the secret strip club but she's unable to see anything above the strippers' feet (not to mention her saying that they may have gotten stuck hiding in the wall).
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Teddy, naturally, is unhappy to see Gretchen offered a burger for free.
  • Must Make Amends: Linda's invested in helping Gretchen to make up for accidentally destroying a book of hairstyles Gretchen spent years building.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: A variation using Stage Names. Since the strippers at Pickles go by stage names like "Throb", it makes it harder for Bob find their phone contacts and makes the conversations a bit awkward. Amusingly, this is inverted as well; Bob repeatedly refers to Jen's cousin Dave as "Hot (Cousin) Dave", but that's her nickname for him and not his name at Pickles, where he isn't regarded as particularly hot by his co-workers. We never hear Dave's actual stage name.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Played straight and then inverted. Tina's the only one interested in playing "Veterinarian," a vet-themed board game she finds for free. But when it comes time to play, Gene and Louise end up doing better while she gets a streak of bad luck. It's clear she's only continuing the game because of how much she talked it up earlier.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Tina "tries" to save face from her horrid luck at "Veterinarian" by quickly hatching a whole plan to sneak into the restaurant's walls to spy on the strip club just to avoid admitting she really doesn't want to play the game.
  • Self-Serving Memory: Gayle tries to comfort Gretchen by saying big sisters aren't perfect, mentioning how Linda once tried to steal her husband. Linda bluntly states that Gayle is the one who tried to steal her husband. This is despite that fact that Gayle doesn't even have a husband to steal, though you really can't trust someone like Gayle to take such details into account.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sore Loser: Tina at "Veterinarian." The moment she starts the game and gets screwed on the first turn for rolling a 6 (which she thought was good luck), she hopes Louise gets a 6 too but quickly laughs it off (badly).
  • Too Dumb to Live: Linda destroyed Gretchen's look book by putting it on top of a hair curler that was plugged in, which she apparently didn't know is dangerous until after the book caught fire.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: In-universe; despite appearing to be a family game, "Veterinarian" describes medical procedures in unnecessarily graphic detail and has several in-game events that can result in the death of a patient.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Hormone-driven Tina is forced to suffer when she realizes there's a strip tease going on in the restaurant, but from the crawl space all she can see is their feet on the counter. Louise has a lot of fun watching Tina freaking out, almost quoting this trope word for word when she compares her to a dog locked out of a tennis ball store.
