Recap / Bob's Burgers S 12 E 15 "Ancient Misbehavin'"

Go To

After feeling slighted by a teacher during a special Ancient Greece unit, Louise, Millie and Regular Sized Rudy take matters into their own hands to restore justice. Meanwhile, Bob gets a room of his own.

Ancient Trope-behavin':

  • Both Sides Have a Point: On the one hand, Louise hardly pays attention in class and even if she did get called on, it's unlikely she'd have gotten any right answers (the one time she does answer, she says Godzilla). On the other hand, she's actually right about Ms. Padaro unintentionally favoring one half of the class while neglecting the other, and Ms. Padaro admits at the end that the round setup of desks makes it impossible to see everyone at once, especially since she's near-sighted and hard of hearing.
  • Continuity Nod: While sleeping in the basement, Bob puts up a Hawk & Chick poster. He also mentions during "Bedtime Is Me Time" that he can listen to Donna Summer, whose albums he put on when he was home alone in "Dawn of the Peck".
  • Counterfeit Cash: Ms. Padaro sets up a market system where students who participate earn coins that they can exchange for prizes. Louise, Rudy, and Millie manage to find a way to create counterfeit coins... until they learn that Ms. Padaro placed a piece of foil in the center of every coin in order to tell them apart from counterfeits. While this doesn't immediately expose the three, it does clue her in that someone in class is counterfeiting coins.
    • Additionally, the counterfeits have a major flaw—ironically, the exact problem they're meant to circumvent. Louise, Rudy, and Millie's lack of participation means they can't use too many coins at once or else Ms. Padaro will get suspicious, which locks them out of the better prizes.
  • Counterpoint Duet: Bob, Gene, and Tina sing a song called "Bedtime Is Me Time". Bob sings about how he loves his new bedtime set-up, while Gene and Tina sing about being completely exhausted at bed and not having any time to themselves due to their new bedtime set-up.
  • Exiled to the Couch: Bob invokes it after realizing he can't sleep from Linda kicking him all night. It works, giving him the best night of sleep he's had in 15 years (in other words, since he and Linda got together). However, the next night sees Linda making a lot of noise instead, forcing Bob to move to the basement so he can get some peace and quiet.
  • Freudian Trio: After the counterfeit coins are discovered, Louise, Rudy, and Millie become this. Millie is the Id and is completely unconcerned with the fact that they've gotten the party canceled because they got to do what they wanted. Rudy is the Superego and panics about coming clean to Ms. Padaro. Louise is the Ego, trying to mediate between the two of them and find a way to get the party uncancelled without getting in too much trouble.
  • Frothy Mugs of Water: Deliberately invoked by Ms. Padaro; Dionysus is famously the Greek god of wine, but because kids obviously aren't allowed alcohol she changes all references to wine into grape juice.
  • Icarus Allusion: Ms. Padaro talks about the myth of Icarus as the counterfeiting operation gets bigger. Rudy and Millie completely overlook how the moral of the myth is relevant to the current situation, with Millie stating "I can't relate to this story at all" with complete sincerity and Rudy's only takeaway being that Icarus was an idiot.
  • Ignored Aesop: While Louise and Rudy learn their lesson about not counterfeiting, Millie quickly starts drafting plans to counterfeit actual currency.
  • Innocently Insensitive: After learning that Linda kicks Bob in her sleep, Tina remarks that she wouldn't do the same to the kids because she loves them. Except the way she words it makes it sound almost as if she doesn't love Bob.
  • Lack of Empathy: While Louise and especially Rudy feel guilty about the counterfeiting getting the party cancelled, Millie doesn't care at all and is more focused on not getting caught.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Ms. Padaro eventually guesses it was Louise, Rudy and Millie who made the counterfeit coins because of their Suspiciously Specific Denials, and as punishment makes them serve food at the symposium.
    • At the end of the episode, Linda tells Bob that making Tina and Gene sleep over with her so often has led to both of them kicking Linda in their sleep like she was kicking Bob at the start of the episode.
  • My Beloved Smother: Linda gets a bit too into having a bedtime party, with both Tina and Gene feeling like they no longer have any time to themselves.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a Shout-Out to the Fats Waller song "Ain't Misbehavin'".
  • Security Blanket: Rudy has a stuffed flounder fish named "Pancake" that he never sleeps without; and even sings a song in the credits about it.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sleep Deprivation: Bob hasn't gotten any sleep lately because Linda keeps kicking in her sleep (she's dreaming that she's a flapper). When he has to sleep alone in the couch, it's the best night's sleep he's ever had. Meanwhile, Gene and Tina can't get any sleep with Linda because she keeps them awake having slumber parties.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Loise, Rudy and Millie basically give themselves away as the counterfeiters by the way they phrase why they think the counterfeiters would have done it.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Bob confesses that he misses how Linda talks in her sleep; it doesn't make any sense, but she's emphatic about it.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: For once, Bob is able to have something for himself and enjoy it in the form of turning the basement into his own little room. He's not even forced to give it up at the end, having willingly invited Linda to share the space with him before deciding to rejoin her in their bedroom of his own volition.
