This episode provides examples of:

  • Anyone Can Die: The third episode in a row where a series regular dies. This time it's Jimmy.
  • Driven to Suicide: It's very clear Jimmy by this point wants to die after everything he suffered, between the upbringing and incest with Gillian, his war trauma, the murder of Angela being his fault and killing the Commodore. He goes to Nucky even knowing it is a trap, when he could have had Richard come along as well and easily snipe Nucky, Owen, Eli and Manny from afar, but didn't.
Jimmy Darmody: I died in the trench. Years back. Thought you knew that.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Jimmy doesn't put up a fuss and isn't even armed even though he knows Nucky is going to kill him.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: James Neary's busy boning his secretary doggy-style over his desk when Jimmy and Richard barge in and point guns at him. After shooing out the secretary, they make Neary sit down at his desk, and make him type a letter at gunpoint implicating Eli in the election rigging, then make him sign it.
James Neary: Nice, fellas. A fucking confession signed at gunpoint.
Jimmy Darmody: It's not just a confession. [Richard grabs Neary by the neck and pushes him back in his chair]
Richard Harrow: It's a suicide note. [shoots Neary through the mouth]
  • Passed-Over Inheritance: Leander reveals that the Commodore actually wrote a will, leaving the bulk of his assets to Luann, his former black servant. Jimmy promptly rips it to shreds so that everything goes to himself and later Tommy.
  • Redemption Rejection: Just a few scenes after basically telling Margaret he'll make a Heel–Face Turn Nucky tells Jimmy "You don't know me. I'm not seeking forgiveness". Right before shooting Jimmy in the head.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Jimmy.
  • Thicker Than Water: Despite what was said earlier Nucky ultimately lets Eli live (albeit with a jail sentence) but kills Jimmy.
  • Volatile Second Tier Position: Observed by Manny Horvitz in his discussion of Odessa, in which he mentions that the "middlemen" have it the toughest of all the crooks in the city, because at that rank it's easier to lose everything than rise to the next rank.
