Recap / Bluey Sticky Gecko

Go To

Mum must get Bluey and Bingo out the door in time for their play date with Judo, but the girls won't leave until they finish their game and the sticky rubber gecko falls down from the ceiling.

Tropes:

  • Agony of the Feet: Chilli accidentally steps on a pin, causing her to clutch her foot in agony.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: At one point, Chilli tasks Bluey with bring her hockey stick so she can bring down the titular toy gecko from the ceiling. Instead, Bluey returns with Chattermax, having been side-tracked by the toy.
  • Bowdlerized: Inverted, actually: When trying to use Chattermax to get the gecko down, she is heard muttering to herself "This thing is really stuck." However, due to an error, on ABC Kids, the subtitles for the episode read "Dammit, really stuck."
  • Bottle Episode: The whole story features only Chilli, Bluey and Bingo and takes place entirely in the entry hall of the family's house.
  • Empathic Environment: Downplayed. The wind gradually gets stronger as Chilli’s patience wanes.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Bluey and Bingo's maternal grandfather is shown in a picture (albeit in his younger years). He will be properly introduced in "Grandad".
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Chilli explains they're going to meet Judo and Wendy in the park, upon closer looking Bluey is taken back by this, showing why she's reluctant to leave on time.
  • Freudian Excuse: Towards the end, Chilli is able to explain both hers and her daughters motives for their respective attitudes. Chilli is adamant to see Judo and Wendy on time because she wants to repay them for their kindness as family friends. Bluey is stalling because she's subconsciously apprehensive about seeing Judo again after some time. And in between, Bingo is taking so long because she's caught up in having fun with her own games and activities, and is too young to have a sense of time.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Nearing the end of her rope, Chilli abruptly decides that on second thought, they won't be leaving, and sits down to read a book. Bluey, however, fails to recognize why she changed tack:
    Bluey: We're not going anywhere?
Chilli: (passive aggressively) Nope! We'll just stay here forever!
  • Irony: The episode ends with Chilli and the girls finally making it out the door... only for Chilli to get a text from Wendy that they’re running late, too.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Bluey finally admits her reluctance to get out the door is because she's nervous about seeing Judo, as it has been a long while since they last played together. This harkens to the fact that Judo's last major appearance was in season one's "Butterflies" (59 episodes prior).
  • Noodle Incident: Wendy made five lasagnas for Chilli and Bandit when they had Bluey.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Downplayed: After Chili steps on a pin, and Bluey asks if she's seen her hat, Chili snaps... and petulantly decides they won't be going to the park afterall.
  • Sanity Slippage: The longer Bluey and Bingo take to leave, the more up the wall Chilli finds herself going. It eventually gets to the point where she basically starts to plead once Bluey goes to find a hat again:
Chilli: (kneels down in front of the open door) The door. (pats on the frame) It is right here. (clasps hands before gesturing outward) All we need to do is walk out of it. It's so easy!
  • Symbolism: The titular gecko remains stuck to the ceiling for the better part of the episode, all the while Chili struggles to bring either Bluey or Bingo to leave the house. Even her best efforts to hurry her daughters falls flat, as does her attempts to dislodge the sticky gecko from the ceiling. By the end, after she's had a heart-to-heart with her girls and gets them to leave the house of their own accord, the gecko finally falls on its own (but not without Chili catching it at the last moment). The gecko mirrors how Bluey and Bingo can't be made to leave any faster, but had to leave on their own time.
