Recap / Bluey Queens

Go To

Bingo and Bluey play a game of Queens and take turns being the Queen and her Butler, but when they both want to be Butler, Mum gets crowned after Dad's short stint as a chaotic Queen.

Tropes:

  • Death Glare: Chili gives this to Bandit when (whilst playing Queen) he overbearingly demands she get "back to work" and calls her "peasant".
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The theme of the episode is framed as this, being about how the most gratifying things in life are because of hard work. Chili spends the better part of the episode cleaning the lorikeet droppings off the deck, even though Bluey points out playing would be so much better. Once her job is finished, Bluey and Bingo make her queen, and she's more than happy to relax.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Invoked. Bluey starts out bored with being the Queen in the titular game because she views it as nothing but sitting around telling the Butler (who has more fun being active) what to do. When Chili comes along as a mere peasant having but a sip of "the queen's" ginger ale, she 'marvels' how being Queen must be hard work, and being delegated to do things nobody else wants to do. Bluey agrees, coming to the epiphany that perhaps being Queen isn't boring, and the challenges that come with it make it satisfying. It's implied that Chili deliberately brought it up to help Bluey come to this conclusion.
  • Fake Brit: An In-Universe example. Throughout the episode, Chili puts on a fake cockney accent. Usually when addressing Bluey or Bingo as the Queen, but Chili keeps it when she herself becomes Queen.
  • Good-Times Montage: After coming into her role as Queen, the audience is treated to a montage of Bluey doing all the glorious queenly duties that are hard work but also gratifying. She attends a parade to greet her people, gives Pat a knighthood, has tea with another fellow queen, and greets other world leaders.
  • The High Queen: Bluey grows into this role once she accepts that being a queen is about responsibility and duty. Not long after, Chili becomes this when Bluey passes on the crown to her.
  • Irony: On paper, being the Queen in Bluey and Bingo's game means you get to boss around people to do this and that, and that sounds fun. But as the episode progresses, it's clear that the girls like being the butler more because it means they get to do something besides sit around.
  • Meaningful Echo: "Wouldn't you rather play?" "[I'm] not afraid of a bit of hard work." This exchange between Bluey and Chili happens twice. First time, Bluey is asking the question, confused as to why her mother would rather do an unpleasant chore when she could play. The second time, it's Chili who's initiating the question concerning her game of play, and Bluey responding signifies that she now understands that it's work (even unpleasant work) that makes things more enjoyable.
  • Verbal Backpedaling: While he plays the Queen, Bandit haughtily tells Chili "Back to work, peasant." Chili shoots him a dirty look, which prompts "Queen" Bandit to wisely retract the statement and sheepishly urge her to "carry on".
