Recap / Bluey Fruitbat

Go To

Chilli announces to her daughters that it's bedtime, but the girls don't want to go to bed and run outside to say goodnight to the animals. Upon learning that fruit bats are nocturnal, Bluey wants to be one so she can stay up all night. Bandit gets the girls to go to bed by playing various "games", then puts them down.

Bingo falls asleep instantly, but Bluey can't sleep. She goes downstairs to find Bandit asleep on the floor, flailing around in his sleep. Chilli says that he's probably dreaming about playing touch football with his friends, which he doesn't get to do as often due to being busy with both work and parenting. This gives Bluey the idea of dreaming that she's a fruit bat.

She then dreams that she goes outside and flies up into the sky with the bats. She flies past houses, eats fruit from the trees, and says hello to Bandit, who is playing touch football with various other dogs.

The next morning, Bluey comes downstairs and, remembering Chilli's comment on Bandit being a busy father, thanks him for looking after her and Bingo. Chilli offers her husband and daughters fruit salad, but Bluey doesn't want any, having grown weary of fruit due to her dream.

Tropes

  • The Compliance Game:
    • Bandit gets the girls to go upstairs to bed by having them pretend to be astronauts.
    • Then, he gets Bluey to take a shower by convincing her to slide on the floor like a penguin afterwards.
    • Finally, he gets the girls to go to bed by having them play a game where he pretends to fall asleep during their bedtime story and they "wake him up".
  • Dream Episode: The episode involves Bluey dreaming about being a fruit bat (or a dog with a fruit bat's behaviour).
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Defied when Bingo uses the toilet before bed so she doesn't wet the bed.
  • Furry Reminder: Bandit moves his arms and legs around makes a whimpering sound in his sleep, much like how real dogs do when they're dreaming.
  • Insomnia Episode: Bluey can't sleep, and decides she wants to be a fruit bat so she can stay up all night.
  • Parents as People: Bluey learns that her dad used to play football with his friends but he had to stop (or not do as often) so he can spend more time with his daughters.
  • Toilet Humor:
    • Bluey giggles when Bandit tells her that fruit bats wee all over themselves because they go to the toilet hanging down.
    • Bingo refers to using the toilet before bed as a "tactical wee".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Bluey believes she can't sleep in order to become a fruit bat in her dreams, she goes downstairs. ...and is met with the sight of Chili playing a giant version of the crocodile game. But to drive home that she now operates on dream logic, she treats it as though her mom is doing a boring chore and sadly remarks that going to sleep didn't work.
  • Urine Trouble: Discussed when Bandit claims that fruit bats urinate on themselves.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Bingo goes to the toilet before going to bed, despite not needing to, in order to prevent any accidental bed wetting during the night, which she calls a "tactical wee." She also knows that bats sleep during the day, and are awake at night (though she does call them "octurnal", rather than "nocturnal"). Of course, given that she is four, she's likely repeating things she's been told verbatim in both cases.
