As we discover what Blue needs, we take the time to help Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper find fruits by describing where they are to each other, sort the laundry by putting clothes in the right places, and help a starfish through a maze to find the ocean.
"What Does Blue Need?" contains examples of:
- Bathing Beauty: Blue is this, as she wanted a bath and enjoys her bath.
- Bathtub Scene: The ending where Blue takes a bath.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Washer, Ironing Board, and Dresser make their only appearances in the series in this episode (excluding inanimate appearances). It's possible they were originally going to be recurring characters, but were quickly dropped.
- Eyebrow Waggle: Steve does this when he cleans up the pawprint with the hose.
- Running Gag: Steve getting splashed with water throughout the episode.
