Recap / Blue Shift Power Struggle

Go To

After riding the elevator down to the old prototype teleporter lab's lower level, Calhoun gets off, and sees that the Xen aliens have taken over. Exploring the first tunnel, Calhoun can see Dr. Rosenberg's colleagues through a fence trying to complete the power cell objective. However, they come under attack by the Xen aliens, which leaves their fate ambiguous. Shortly after, the HECU are shown to have invaded the lower level as well as they break into the tunnel, and try to kill Calhoun. After Calhoun disposes of them, he makes his way further into the lower level fighting the many HECU soldiers that have bunkered down throughout the lower level. Eventually, Calhoun makes it to the room where he saw Rosenberg's colleagues. He finds a fatally wounded security guard with the spare power cell next to him. Before the guard dies, he informs Calhoun in his dying breath that he can use the charging station behind him to power up the cell, and send it up to Rosenberg.

Despite sounding simple enough, the problem is that the power generators that are further down the lower level are turned off; meaning that Rosenberg's colleagues were unable to charge up the power cell. As a result, Calhoun has to fight his way deeper into the prototype teleporter lab's lower level in order to get the generators working. The journey has Calhoun fighting through many more Xen aliens and HECU soldiers until reaching the generator room, which Calhoun has to raise the coolant reserves to keep the generators from overheating. Once the coolant is raised, Calhoun turns on the generators, and then treks his way back to the charging room where the security guard died at. Calhoun pushes the power cell into the charging station, and after charging it up, he pushes the fully charged power cell over to the nearby payload elevator, and sends it up to Rosenberg. Once the power cell's been sent up, Calhoun returns to the lower level's starting elevator, and rides it back up to the old prototype lab.

This Chapter contains examples of:

  • Backtracking: It's basically Blue Shift's version of the "Power Up" level from the original game. The level has Calhoun going deep into the prototype teleporter lab's lower level to turn on the power generators, and then heading back to charge up the power cell.
  • Fetch Quest: The main objective of the level is to retrieve a charged up power cell for Dr. Rosenberg.
  • Road Block: Several.
    • At the start of the level, you can't proceed any further until you activate the cutscene where you find Rosenberg's colleagues, a security guard and a scientist, trying to retrieve a power cell only to come under attack by the Xen aliens. Once the cutscene is over, HECU soldiers come charging in from a nearby locked door.
    • You can't use the charging station to power up the cell until the power generators deep in the prototype teleporter lab's lower level are turned back on.
  • Sidetrack Bonus: Some areas provide supplies that are off the beaten path. There's one particular vent area that houses Snark ammo, which along with the Chumtoad Lair from the previous chapter are the only places to obtain Snarks.
