- Bullying a Dragon: Fran to deranged criminal thug Danny when she finally gets him to learn to read by ordering him around like he was an unruly child.
- London Gangster:
- Gus, the titular fixer, seems to be The Don of some unnamed crime syndicate. His nephew Danny seems to be a goon, presumably for the same gang.
- Manny dresses like and affects the mannerisms of a gangster when he meets with Gus, which draws ridicule from Bernard.Bernard: You think you're a gangster?!
Manny: I'm known in all the boroughs.
- Mister Big: It's a bit startling when Gus finally shows up onscreen and he's played by Mick Walter. Bernard is unable to take him seriously.
- Never Learned to Read: Danny's illiteracy is at the core of the A-plot, as he demands Bernard and Manny teach him in time for his autobiography reading, and threatens to murder them and their mums if they fail.
- Oh, Crap!: Manny and Bernard when they realise the enormous task of getting Danny to read, and the consequences if they fail.
- And again when Bernard realises he was mouthing off about Danny when he was right behind him.
- Suddenly Shouting: Danny meeting Manny and Bernard:Danny: People think I'm a thug. That's very upsetting. That's why I wrote the book, to set a few things straight.Manny: To show the real, adorable you.Danny: EXACTLY!
