Recap / Big Mouth S 3 E 1 Girls Are Angry Too

Go To

When a shop class mishap inspires a sexist dress code, Jessi rebels, Missy struggles to keep her alter ego in check, and Andrew gets a wake-up call.

Episode Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: The last time that Jessi wore a sexy outfit to school the most aggressive negative reaction she experienced was from Lola, another girl! Otherwise, Jessi enjoyed all the male attention she got and it was her reason for wearing the sexy red bra to begin with, at least until Mr. Lizer started flirting and Lola snapped her bra strap. Jessi also seems to have completely forgotten when she initiated Slut-Shaming of Gina just because she was jealous of her breasts and all the male attention they attracted.
    • A Downplayed one, but it's implied Andrew still has some suspicions that Lars really needs the wheelchair, despite having pulled Lars out of it.
  • The Bus Came Back: Mirror Missy comes back, but instead of body shaming real Missy, she's trying to push her to show legit anger.
    • The Shame Wizard comes back while Andrew's at the MGTOW meeting. He is just there to buy Nazi dildos.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with a poem by Maurice about the start of a new season (the beginning one being about spring, and the ending one being about the start of season 3).
  • Character Development: Like in the previous season, Missy.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Shannon voices discomfort in Jessi dressing so provocatively, Jessi gets confrontational, only to slowly realize that participating in the Slut Walk isn't as bright of an idea as she thought. Unfortunately, she's in too deep and ends up following through with it. It doesn't help that Cantor Dina likes the idea, much to Shannon and Jessi's displeasure.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: While on a sex break, Jay gets distracted imagining Devin and Devon as sexy turkeys, and accidentally cuts off the tip of Andrew's finger with a buzzsaw. This is what kick-starts the rest of the episode.
  • Everyone Has Standards: No one has forgotten what Andrew has done. On the other hand, they all seem genuinely distraught when his finger is cut.
  • Fingore: Andrew's finger gets chopped off by a buzzsaw.
  • Going Cold Turkey: When Jay announces he is not masturbating anymore, his friends accuse him of this, but the Literal-Minded Jay thinks they mean he was going to fuck a turkey. By the end of the episode, just as Connie predicted, he ends up actually fucking a turkey.
  • Heel Realization: Andrew has one when his behavior and current views lead to him accidentally attending a Nazi meeting (he is Jewish). This makes him realize how much of an asshole he's been, which leads to him breaking down in tears in front of Nick.
  • Humiliation Conga: Andrew culminates the one started in My Furry Valentine when the tip of his finger is chopped off by a buzzsaw.
  • I'm a Man; I Can't Help It: Defied. While the boys call themselves "animals" as an excuse for their lack of self control with ogling the girls in their class, Missy tears into it during her anger-induced rant and tells them that they're not animals and need to learn self-control.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Guy Bilzerian is, mostly unintentionally, correct in that the shop class accident was caused by Jay being distracted by Devin in a tanktop (as well as Devon). Although the fact that Jay was going through masturbation withdrawal and not paying any attention to what he was doing was probably something even he did not know about.
    • Jessi chides Andrew for leering at the girls when they're doing the slut-walk, as the reason behind it is more complicated than simply letting the boys have an eyeful. Moments later Jessi shames Missy of not dressing in a way that would get that reaction from Andrew. All in all it seems like Andrew's naivete is more understandable than Jessi's outright hypocrisy.
    • Also, the dress code issue entirely. While it is obvious that Mr. Lizer is a barely-concealed misogynist, his inability to come up with clothing restrictions for the boys stems mainly from the fact that none of them wear anything more revealing than a t-shirt to school and there honestly is not much male clothing that he could ban that the boys actually wear in the first place.
  • Moral Myopia: The girls who participate in the slut-walk all accuse Missy of being a traitor because she came to school in her usual outfit rather than in something deliberately provocative. As Missy's mother pointed out earlier, the whole point of a slut-walk is to let women wear whatever they want. Emphasized in the episode in that even Jessi herself is uncomfortable leaving the house in her "slut" outfit, despite her argument that girls wear such clothing for their own gratification.
  • Never My Fault: Andrew holds into this until the last part.
  • Only Sane Man: For once, Nick fills this role as he tries to be a mediator between both the boys and the girls, but ends up being chewed out by both groups.
  • Previously on…: The episode begins with a recap of the events from Season 2 and the My Furry Valentine special.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After being shamed by the girls, being pressured by Mr. Lizer, and having to deal with the boys, Missy lets her anger out, giving one hell of a tongue lashing at everybody around her. It's so effective that she manages to get away with telling a teacher to eat his own ass, and gets the dress code completely scrapped, aside of putting everyone in their place.
  • Shout-Out: After the dress code is implemented, the school billboard says "Say yes to the dress code".
  • Straw Feminist: To Jessi's dismay, it turns out that many of the girls who participate in the "Slut Walk" are this. Devin in particular thinks that they are protesting for girls' right to be a "cock tease" and Lola engages in provocative dancing. Meanwhile, Missy supports the original idea behind the protest, but gets denounced by the other girls for not wearing slutty clothing. Even Jessi herself attacks Missy.
  • Time Skip: Two weeks have passed since the events of My Furry Valentine.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While he was always a piece of shit, this is when Lizer gets upgraded from asshole to villain, given how misogynistic his actions are, and it only goes downhill from there.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In a way, mirror Missy. While her first appearance was her shaming Missy over her body, in this occasion she is encouraging Missy to defend herself and express her anger, and in a way, accepting her dark side, and not to care about what people think about her. It's telling that she is genuinely pleased when Missy hits her, and licks her own blood in joy.
