Go To

While Andrew and Nick deal with parental crises, Jessi meets her new sibling, and Matthew realizes he's made Jay into a different person.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: In previous seasons, Nick wanted his father to be less effeminate. In this episode, he gets what he wants, and realizes that, under his father Seamus' influence, Elliot is abusive towards him and argumentative with Diane.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Barbara reveals that she's been unhappy with their marriage for a long time, Marty asks if it's been since Season 3 or 2, only for her to reveal that she's been unhappy since the pilot.
  • Call-Back: Barbara talks about the first time she and Marty met, back when he was sweet. The flashback shows that Stu was the one to push Marty to comfort Barbara rather than continue yelling about the damage to his car.
  • Continuity Nod: Jay doesn't want to go into Panera Bread with Matthew because the Sorcerers of The Squaretable banished him for revealing how a magic trick worked.
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Andrew is dismayed to find that what he feels after waking up from a night's rest isn't the result of a wet dream but his urine.
Andrew: Oh no. I went pee pee in my sleepy.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Played with. After Jessi congratulates Matthew for successfully taming Jay, he realizes that he's been slowly changing Jay without meaning to.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Jessi is saddened when her father says that he's "going to do it right this time" in regards to the newborn Delilah.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Throughout the episode, several characters suggest lying to make someone else feel better.
    • Connie tells Montel to lie so that Jessi feels better about her father seemingly neglecting her.
    • Flanny lies about how Stu looks like he's getting better.
    • Gil suggest that Elijah keep the fact that he's asexual a secret from Missy because humans are judgmental about things they don't understand.
    • Maury advises Matthew to lie to Jay so that the latter can be free to be himself again.
  • Noodle Incident: Jay mentions that he once ran nude in the woods until he lost consciousness for days.
  • Potty Failure: Andrew develops incontinence due to feeling anxious about his parents fighting all the time.
