Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 2 E 13 City Of Monsters Part Two

Go To

Big Hero 6 continues to fight the monsters attacking the city while Hiro is forced to help Liv with her ultimate goal.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Battle Discretion Shot: All we see are Hiro, Liv and Di’s reactions when Karmi takes down Chris. Also counts as an Offscreen Moment of Awesome.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Minimax summons Ned Ludd to save the heroes from Liv's monsters.
    • Di is about to mutate Hiro when the recovering Liv takes her phone, deactivates Karmi and Chris' implants and confronts her for what she had done.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Big Hero 6 brings down Di's plan, all of the monsters are returned to normal, the real Liv Amara awakens and is cured of her parasynths, and Di and Chris are arrested for their crimes. However, no one knows what is going to happen to Sycorax or the real Liv due to Di's actions, and just as Hiro is getting ready to start his actual friendship with Karmi, he learns that her parents took her away from SFIT out of fear for her safety.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Momakase, Mr. Sparkles, Orso Knox and High Voltage are returned to normal after being blasted by a reformed Bessy, while Karmi and Chris have their chips deactivated by Liv.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Ned brings Bessie back to his side, one blast from Bessie fries the monsters' mutation chips without them putting up a fight.
  • "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: Played with. Hiro and Baymax control the nanobots inside Liv's body to fight the parasynths.
  • Feed It a Bomb: The queen parasynth is too tough to be affected by the cure from the outside, so Hiro and Baymax work together to force-feed it the cure, causing it to dissolve from within.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Liv created her clone Di to find a cure, but didn't count on the lengths she would go to do it.
  • Growing Muscles Sequence: Di activates Chris' chip to make him more muscular and attack Baymax.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Ned manages to tame the Bessie bear and turn it against the other villains. After Di's defeat, the Mayoi and Orso Knox end up freed from their brainwashing.
    • A minor case: Honey Lemon has a now good Mayoi as a pet.
  • He Knows Too Much: Di tries to mutate Hiro into another monster because he's the only one who knows her entire plan, making him a loose end.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Di stole Bessie and created a mutant bear with her anti-tech powers. But, Ned bringing her back to his side means Bessie can easily cure the monsters because their mutations are tech-based.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Wasabi covers his eyes and shouts "I can't watch!" as Ned confronts Bessie, thinking he'll be horribly killed. Then when Ned manages to tame Bessie and defeat the villains...
Wasabi: (disappointed) Aw, now I wished I had watched.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Hiro desperately tries to get through to Karmi, reminding her of their friendship and telling her that he cares about her. It works, and she protects Hiro from Chris until the awakened Liv Amara is able to deactivate her chip.
  • I Lied: Di promises to stop her attack on the city and cure the monsters if Hiro cures Liv, but as soon as he succeeds she tries to mutate him to eliminate him as a witness. Of course, Liv decides she will have none of that.
  • Internal Reveal: Hiro learns about the real Liv.
  • Magic Pants: High Voltage definitely aren't wearing a shred of clothing in their mutant eel forms, but when their transformation is reversed, their clothing comes back without so much as a stain. The same can be said for Orso Knox. By comparison, Karmi's clothing still manages to fit her monster form and remains damaged after she turns back.
  • Mood Whiplash: At the end of the episode, Hiro and the team are relaxing in the cafe, having saved the city again. Hiro goes off to Karmi's lab to check in on her...and finds it cleared out and the lights off.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Di manages to slap a patch on Hiro to mutate him and reaches for her phone to trigger it... only to be stopped by Liv, who has woken up and is ashamed at the lengths her clone has gone to save her life.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Uttered by Hiro when he is told by Granville that Karmi's parents came and took her home.
  • Never My Fault:
Mr. Sparkles: It's everyone else's fault but mine.
  • Pinned to the Ground: After being thrown in front of her, Di proceeds to pin Hiro to the ground with her knee on his stomach and attempt to plant the chip on him to turn him into a monster under her control.
  • Previously on…: Narrated by Fred in his usual, enthusiastic style.
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Liv had developed the parasynths as a life-prolonging treatment, and tested them on herself when no one would take her work seriously. When they turned out to be harmful, she put herself in cryogenic stasis until her clone Di could find a cure.
  • Put on a Bus: Karmi get taken away by her parents after everything that had happened. Hiro is upset, but the end of the episode shows him liking one of her fanfictions, so it will probably not be the last time we see her.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Liv finally got her cure, but her clone went rogue and went to such ruthless lengths to do so, ruined hundreds of innocent lives and threatened two children, and she now has to live with the guilt of that.
  • The Reveal: Liv Amara is actually her clone Di, who was supposed to help cure the real Liv.
  • Ship Tease: Even more so between Hiro and Karmi. The way Hiro warmly hugs Karmi and the sustained smile he has at the end after liking her fanfiction heavily implies that he's starting to develop feelings for her.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Baymax points out Di could have just asked for their help instead of resorting to kidnapping and extortion. Baymax is literally programmed to provide medical aid.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Monster Karmi puts up a fight against Chris but loses to him soon enough. He is Strong and Skilled while she is a freshly transformed girl with no combat skills whatsoever.
  • To Be Continued: The final shot of the episode shows Hiro favoriting Karmi's latest fanfiction. Underneath the picture of her as Lab Lady is a "TO BE CONTINUED...", implying that Karmi's personal story (as well as her fanfiction) hasn't ended yet.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee:
    • GoGo voices her plan to get all the monsters in one place and fight them together, and the team succeeds... until Momakase uses Bessie to wreck their equipment.
    • Fred never shares the details of his back-up plan until the plan already starts working and saves the day.
  • Villain Ball: Still clutching it from the previous episode, Di kidnaps Hiro and Baymax to cure Liv even though, as Baymax points out, they would have done it voluntarily.
  • We Need a Distraction: Baymax is distracting the giant parasynth so Hiro can attack it.
Baymax: Hello. I am here to distract you.
