Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 19 The Bot Fighter

Go To

A rash of robot-committed robberies leads Hiro back into the world of bot fighting to prove Yama is behind it.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Abusive Parents: There are some hints of this with Trina and Obake.
  • Bad Liar: Hiro can't stop himself from smiling when talking about going back to the bot fights for a second night. When Fred points it out, he forces a frown that GoGo immediately denounces as fake.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: One from Fred about the rash of mysterious robberies:
Fred: It's a crime spree, plus a mystery at the same time! A—a—a crimystery!
  • Brain Bleach: After witnessing the video of Yama dancing, Wasabi states it's going to give him nightmares and GoGo laments that she'll never be rid of the image. Downplayed with Honey, who thinks it's strangely sweet.
  • Combining Mecha: Trina is able to make the infected bots merge together into a man-sized bot that can effectively battle Big Hero 6.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Hiro reaches this when he realises that the only other connection that the attacking robots have besides fighting Yama, is fighting Trina. She was behind the whole thing.
  • Evil Counterpart: Trina represents how Hiro could have ended up if he hadn't had his family and friends to get him out of the bot fighting world. Hiro lampshades this.
  • Faux Horrific: The video of Yama dancing is treated as this by the characters, with Honey Lemon in particular saying she wants to look away, but can't.
  • Foreshadowing: When we first see Trina, she loses a bot fight and her opponent notes she's fought every night for the past week, and has not made it past the first round. At the time, it seems meant to set her up as The Determinator, but it's actually a clue that she's behind the string of bot robberies.
Gus: Take some advice from a pro, Trina. Give up!
Trina: You wish, Gus. I'm playing the long game.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Hiro develops one with Trina. He helps her improve her bot, but takes no prisoners when their bots enter the ring.
  • Group Hug: The team has one at the end of the episode after Hiro thanks his friends for looking out for him.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Aunt Cass picks up Hiro after he's once again arrested at a bot fight, he tells her he had a good reason for being there. However, as he isn't ready to tell her about his superhero life, it comes off as him trying to make excuses, leading to him being grounded.
  • Not Me This Time: Everyone thinks Yama is the one behind the rogue robots. However, they conclude that this kind of thing is beyond Yama's capabilities and find out it was Trina after all.
  • Off the Wagon: Hiro returns to bot-fighting (for justified reasons, technically) and it's difficult not to think of someone picking up smoking again or something.
  • Retcon: The movie had Hiro specifically state that bot fighting wasn't illegal, betting on it was. This episode has it so that bot fighting itself is illegal.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: Trina is a lot more human-like than Baymax is, even going beyond her programmed mission in order to commit the robberies.
  • Robotic Reveal: Trina is a robot working for her "father" Obake to gather information on Hiro.
  • Ship Tease: Hiro and Trina get this a lot, and Hiro's clearly shown to have a crush on her until he finds out she's evil.
  • You Are Grounded!: Aunt Cass grounds Hiro for going back to bot fighting.
