Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 15 Mini Max

Go To

Hiro invents a tiny robot, Mini-Max, to supervise and be a sidekick to Fred while the rest of the team is in class.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Fred at first appears to be upset that the team doesn't think he should patrol alone and needs a robot to essentially be his nanny. Turns out instead that he's ecstatic that they made him a Robot Buddy sidekick.
  • The Bus Came Back: The former Big Bad, Robert Callaghan appears again with Hiro visiting him in prison.
  • Coat, Hat, Mask: When sneaking into Good Luck Alley, Hiro disguises Baymax with a trenchcoat, hat and fake moustache.
  • Emo Teen: Young Obake had the look with his hairstyle, but he seemed upbeat in the flashback, before the accident.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Globby turns into a giant penny, its face is that of Dibs.
  • Heel Realization: By this point, Callaghan is very regretful at what happened to Tadashi, and while he knows Hiro isn't happy to see him again, all that matters to him now is that Abigail is back, alive and well.
  • Hero Insurance: Downplayed. Fredzilla's property damage while chasing Globby ends up making splashy headlines, and he's only lucky that no one pressed charges on him. The kids realize this is a real problem, and he needs someone to keep him in check.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Since not all of Big Hero 6 can be present all the time, Hiro created Mini-Max as damage control because Fred keeps causing property damage.
  • It's All My Fault: Granville said Obake's experiment was hers because she blamed herself for him getting injured.
  • Logic Bomb: Fred inadvertently shuts down the security system by arguing to himself that the robots looking for threats are themselves a threat, causing them to attack themselves. As Fred continues arguing, the security system's CPU gets so confused it blows its circuits.
  • My Greatest Failure: Granville lets her former student conduct his experiments, which resulted in an accident that seriously injured him and Granville covering for him by saying it was her work that injured her student before resigning out of guilt. She learned that day that limits needed to be placed on her students, however gifted they are, in order to prevent them from experiencing the same tragedy that befell her former student.
  • One Degree of Separation: As it turns out, both Robert Callaghan and Obake knew Granville very well.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Obake once again gets a scene at the end of the episode, where he observes Big Hero 6 and their accomplices. Unlike previous episodes, however, this one regards Granville, and he looks at her, silently and angrily, a far cry from his usual theatrics.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Globby tries to hide from Fred by using a ski mask... and nothing else.
  • Rejected Apology: Although Callaghan is sincerely sorry about Tadashi, Hiro makes it clear he's not ready to forgive him just yet.
Hiro: Tadashi would have wanted me to forgive you. [exhales sharply] Someday I hope I can.
  • The Reveal: Granville resigned after one of her students was almost killed in a lab accident, blaming herself for letting students use the lab after hours. Although neither Hiro nor Granville realize it yet, the student is clearly Obake.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: There’s a reason why things like safety regulations exist. Granville found this out the hard way when her leniency and lack of supervision eventually led to one of her students becoming hospitalized.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Fred has a fear of spiders, which prevents him from defending himself from the spider-like security robots.
