Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 06 Failure Mode

Go To

Globby is trying to steal a painting. Meanwhile, Hiro must present a way for a building to withstand earthquakes. During Big Hero 6's first attempt to capture Globby, Fred accidentally turns a drinking fountain into something that was deemed "art".

Tropes:

  • Accidental Art: During their first attempt to stop Globby, Fred accidentally incinerates a water fountain, melting it. The next morning, the museum patrons mistake it for a new artwork, which Fred claims credit for.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In spite of the heroes' efforts to protect the painting, Globby manages to steal it.
  • Central Theme: The value of art is discussed throughout the episode, with Honey trying to teach Baymax on what it is, but he has a hard time seeing it beyond a surface level. Obake also doesn't have any real feelings on Lenore Shimamoto's art, but states that you have to look "below the surface" to find real value (which in this instance is literal, with blueprints for a device being under said art he had acquired).
  • Giant Novelty Check: Fred sells his artwork for one million dollars and is paid with a big check. But since he's already rich, it's nothing to him, so he donates it to the museum to compensate them for the loss of Shimamoto's painting, and to replace the drinking fountain.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: The museum guard doesn't help Big Hero 6 fight Globby because he's only paid to say "Don't touch the art".
  • Here We Go Again!: During the span of the episode, Honey Lemon attempts to teach Baymax about art and how it can affect emotional health, though this is met with little success. It isn't until the end that Baymax finally grasps the concept. However;
Baymax: Fred's art evoked many emotions today. It might be more accurate to say, "Art is in the heart of the beholder."
Honey Lemon: Aw, you've really learned a lot about art, Baymax. That was very poetic.
    Baymax: What is poetry?
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Globby develops a better understanding of his powers.
  • Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!: Karmi shoots video of Hiro's first two failed attempts at the class project and posts it. When his third attempt is successful, Hiro returns the favor and shoots a picture of Karmi's shocked face.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Globby pulls this on the heroes during the first time they prevent him from stealing the painting.
  • I Taste Delicious: Globby can turn his glob into edible materials and considers himself delicious.
  • It's Been Done: When Hiro's first idea for a building fails, he comes up with three other ideas only to learn from his friends that GoGo already did the first one, Honey Lemon did the second one, and Tadashi did the third one.
  • Last-Minute Project: Hiro's first model, with Granville noting that the paint is still wet. When it falls apart, Hiro gets the paint smeared on his hands and face.
  • Literal Metaphor: When Obake says one has to look "below the surface" of Leonora Shimamoto's painting, he's talking about the blueprints hidden within it.
  • Melismatic Vocals: Played for Laughs; Wasabi is revealed to have a powerful operatic voice. Hiro is literally knocked out of his chair.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Globby finally starts using his powers better.
  • The Reveal: Globby stole the painting for Obake and the painter was also a scientist who hid a project behind the painting.
  • Shout-Out: Globby's ability to morph parts and portions of his body is much like that of Metamorpho.
  • Sore Loser: When Hiro's final model manages to withstand the earthquake test, Karmi initially accuses him of cheating and is shocked when Professor Granville supports Hiro.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Two of the ideas Hiro decided not to present because others already did them were presented by two of his classmates.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Globby develops the ability to better control his body and manipulate his chemical makeup, allowing him to escape with the painting.
  • Wham Shot: We get our first good look at Obake's face.
