A cardinal from the Doctor’s own people recruits him and Jamie for a mission, while Victoria stays behind to learn graphology. But things are not what they seem.
- Armed with Canon: This story spends time poo-poohing the Season 6B theory and suggesting a way that "The Two Doctors" can fit into the Second Doctor’s timeline with little issue.
- Everyone Has Standards: The best way to define the Cardinal's decision to just erase the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria's memories of this experience in the end; officially she's obliged to take the Doctor into custody as a criminal, but she justifies not doing so because she doesn't want others to know she needed the help of a criminal.
- Evil All Along: The Cardinal recruiting the Doctor turns out to be The Meddling Monk's new incarnation.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: All of Jamie's newly gained knowledge of the Time Lords is erased.
- Samus Is a Girl: The real Cardinal. Or rather “Samus was a man, but became a girl”.
- Tricked Out Time: Ultimately the Doctor and Jamie trick the Monk when they go back in time to a point before their "original" arrival, allowing them to witness the Monk attack the real Cardinal and thus gain the opportunity to help save the original by aiding in the Cardinal's regeneration.
