Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who JALS 2 E 2 The Necropolis Express

Go To

After Ellie's untimely death at the hands of Gabriel Sanders, Jago and Litefoot fear that she, too, may become one of the living dead. They don't have the means to ascertain whether her body has been fully drained of blood (guaranteeing her eternal death) or has the potential for vampirism, and they shudder at the thought of having to desecrate her corpse with fire or wooden stakes. In order to preserve her dignity, they settle on getting her buried in hallowed ground as quickly as possible, and Litefoot bribes the driver of a graveyard night train — nicknamed "The Necropolis Express" by the locals.

Once the two arrive at the graveyard, Jago notices a wailing, shuffling woman who appears to have too many gruesome injuries to still be alive. A queer lightning strike illuminates the graveyard, and the atmosphere is chilling. Before long, they meet the night caretaker, a hooded and crooked figure.

Inevitably, Jago and Litefoot realise that things are not as they seem when they rather accidentally find the graveyard's catacombs. It houses the laboratory of the caretaker — who stands up and removes his cowl to reveal his true face. He is Dr. Sibelius Crow, an erstwhile friend of Litefoot from their university days. Crow has set up a laboratory for his experiments on corpses, using the notes given to him by his dear colleage, Mr. Sanders. When Litefoot curtly informs him that Sanders is dead, Crow takes it as a bluff and reveals his plans: he will animate the dead, in order to provide foot soldiers for her Majesty the Queen, and to secure the glory of the worldwide British Empire. And just to spite Jago and Litefoot, his next experiment will be performed on the poor dead girl they seem to care so much about — Ellie.

Unfortunately for Crow, just as he's forcing Jago to help operate the machinery, Ellie's vampirism kicks in and she attacks him in blind Horror Hunger. Jago and Litefoot manage to destroy the power supply and leave the crypt as it comes crahing down on itself, killing both Crow and his animated corpses.

In the aftermath, Ellie calms down and slowly comes to terms with what's happened to her. Litefoot, despite being apprehensive about the threat she now poses, promises her that he can arrange a steady supply of blood to satiate her Horror Hunger. She goes back to working at the bar without much fuss — after all, the evenings of London, or even the foggy daytime, are well-suited to the living dead. Things are almost back to normal, except Sanders shows up at the Red Tavern, hideously disfigured from the fire.
