Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who JALS 13 E 4 Too Much Reality

Go To

Picking up immediately after the events of the previous story. ‘Jago’ is disorientated after his ordeal inside the distillation chamber. ‘Litefoot’, at the behest of Aubrey and Betterman, wants to take ‘Jago’ to the mortuary to be properly examined for any unforeseen side effects. ‘Litefoot’ loads ‘Jago’ into the carriage and they set off. Jago suggests both Infernal Investigating parties should head for the Red Tavern (which Aubrey and Betterman are not familiar with) to properly introduce themselves.

At the Red Tavern, Aubrey and Betterman ask Jago and Litefoot to explain themselves. Litefoot warns the two men that their situation is hard to believe, but Aubrey assures him that they have seen some extraordinary things in their lives and their story should be no different…

At the mortuary, ‘Litefoot’ has finished his examination of ‘Jago’. ‘Litefoot’ remarks on how the past few hours have made an exciting impact on their mundane lives.

At the Red Tavern, Litefoot is surprised to discover that Aubrey and Betterman are not as close-minded as he anticipated. They accept his parallel universe theory after seeing their identical doubles in the cellar. Plus, the similarity of their cases against Weng-Chiang support the claim, except Jago points out one big difference – Aubrey and Betterman had no help from a time traveller called The Doctor and his companion Leela…

Out on the streets, a man is attacked and killed by something inhuman. Not long after the attack, a policeman comes across the body and whistles for assistance.

At the mortuary, ‘Jago’ and ‘Litefoot’ are visited by Inspector Quick. Quick informs ‘Litefoot’ that he would like him to look at a body that has been brought in. ‘Jago’ offers to come with him to get his bearings. Quick leads ‘Litefoot’ to the examination room where he explains that the body is doing something rather inexplicable. ‘Litefoot’ looks at the body and is horrified by what he sees. He declares that this is something that Aubrey and Betterman better look at…

At the Red Tavern, Both pairs of Infernal Investigators are surprised to learn that it’s not just the case of Weng-Chiang that is similar between them, but their cases as well, except that while Jago and Litefoot had a considerable challenge bringing down enemies such as Dr. Tulp, Aubrey and Betterman state their enemies were beaten with relative ease. Aubrey arrogantly states that they are probably just more adept at handling the infernal. Inspector Quick arrives to meet with Aubrey and Betterman. He is shocked to see Jago and Litefoot here as he had just met them in the mortuary. Aubrey simply states that the men before him are their twins. Quick asks Aubrey and Betterman to come to the mortuary to investigate a body. Jago and Litefoot offer to help investigate as well.

On the way to the mortuary, Quick explains that the body they discovered was rapidly fading from existence. After Jago mentions how things on this world are not so different from his own, Quick demands an explanation…

At the mortuary, both pairs of Infernal Investigators examine the transparent body and notice how it is growing fainter and fainter as they speak. ‘Jago’ and ‘Litefoot’ arrive in the office, their real counterparts are relieved to see ‘Jago’ back on his feet. Quick arrives and announces that another body has been brought in with similar fading properties. Plus, it was found not far from the body currently on the slab. Aubrey deduces that means the killings are in a localised area, so Betterman suggests that they head out to question the locals in the morning. ‘Litefoot’ offers to house Jago and Litefoot and everyone arranges to meet at his home next morning.

The next morning, Aubrey, Betterman, ‘Jago’ and Quick all arrive at ‘Litefoot’s’ house to discuss their plan of action. They all plan to interview as many people as possible by splitting into two groups. ‘Litefoot’ arranges to return to the mortuary to investigate the bodies further. The partnerships are Litefoot and Quick, Betterman and ‘Jago’, and Aubrey and Jago. With their plan set, the seven men leave to start their enquiries.

All three groups interview separate witnesses. All of whom claim the murders to be the work of a demon. One witness in particular claims that the demon started appearing after a star fell from the sky and landed in an area nearby called Johnson’s Patch.

Elsewhere on the streets, a man is attacked by something inhuman. Before he is killed, he lets out a cry that alerts all three groups to his location. However, the killer has disappeared before they find it, plus the victim is already fading away. Betterman deduces that the killer cannot have got far away. Litefoot spots a shadowy creature in the alleyway. All three groups give chase, but not before Quick instructs a nervous ‘Jago’ to fetch an officer to deliver the body to the mortuary for ‘Litefoot’ to examine.

Both pairs of Infernal Investigators and Quick chase the demon through an alleyway towards Johnson’s Patch, which Litefoot realises is where the falling star landed, according to one of his witnesses. They all theorise that the demon is possibly heading for it.

The group arrives at a marshy field called Johnson’s Patch. They look around and find nothing that stands out. Jago looks down and notices something covered up by patches of grass. Betterman pulls the grass away and they discover a metal door leading into the ground…their mysterious falling star! Betterman finds a button by the door and presses it, which opens the door leading inside into the dark ship. The group venture inside…

Inside the fallen star, the group discover light at the end of the corridor deeper within and head for it. Litefoot deduces from the architecture that the star is a spaceship that crash landed and their murderous demon is inside somewhere. The group reach the heart of the ship where they discover their demon. Suddenly, a woman fades into existence and confirms that the probe is dormant before becoming slightly transparent again. The woman remarks on how it was only a matter of time before she was discovered, but she did not expect Jago and Litefoot to find her. The woman introduces herself as Angelica, but she was also known as Mrs. Bartholomew of the Chapel of Night! After she was defeated, she withdrew her spiritual essence from the body of Mrs Bartholomew and retreated to this ship. She raises a weapon at the group and assure them despite her incorporeal appearance, it can still kill them…

At the mortuary, ‘Jago’ delivers the latest fading victim to ‘Litefoot’. Despite the near death experiences they have recently been through, both men agree that they have been thoroughly enjoying the experience. ‘Litefoot’ suggests that after the case is closed, they could talk with Aubrey and Betterman about a partnership.

Inside the spaceship, both Infernal Investigators and Quick learn from Angelica that the ship came from another Earth in another universe. It was an experimental interdimensional ship carrying the advance guard to conquer the planet. Unfortunately, it crashed, leaving Angelica the only survivor. As she cannot exist corporeally in this universe, Angelica devised a way to bring through her invasion force via bodily possession using the Chapel of Night as a front. As Jago and Litefoot stopped her plans, she had to find another way to manifest herself and her people. She explains that she used the ship’s probe to kill people and extract portions of their universal matter and combine it with herself to make herself more physical in this universe. The side effect is that the victims fade out of reality as there is not enough reality essence to maintain them in the universe. But with the five people standing before her, she can extract their reality and be made whole in this reality. Angelica points her gun at the group and orders them to go into the next room…

At the mortuary, ‘Litefoot’ thinks that the group would be appreciative of some assistance. He and ‘Jago’ prepare to leave to search for both Infernal Investigators and Quick.

Angelica leads the group into a room where a sinister sphere dominates the room. She orders Jago and Litefoot to take positions on either side of it. Angelica explains that once she activates the machine, it will extract the essences that make them real in this reality. While it will kill them, she assures them it will be a quick death. She powers up the machine…

On the streets of London, ‘Jago’ retraces his steps to the alleyway where the Investigators discovered the recent dead body and the demon. He remembers that they chased it into the alleyway. ‘Litefoot’ suggests they follow the alleyway to see where it leads.

Inside the ship, Angelica’s machine has reached maximum power. But nothing has happened to Jago and Litefoot yet, which greatly confuses her. Litefoot deduces that the machine can only extract the essences of people from this universe, but since they do not come from this universe, the machine has no effect on them! The machine begins to malfunction, causing Angelica to be distracted enough for Quick to disarm the weapon out of her hands. Litefoot pulls out a random cable to cause more damage to the ship. Angelica realises that Litefoot has torn out the reality stabiliser, which will cause the ship to phase out of existence! With no time left to lose, both Infernal Investigators and Quick rush to exit the ship, leaving Angelica to her fate.

The group rush to the exit only to find the exit door is sealed shut. The only way to open it is to rush back to the ship’s control room! Suddenly the door begins to open. With no time to question it, the group rush out the door and to safety.

Outside the ship, they discover ‘Jago’ and ‘Litefoot’ waiting for them. ‘Jago’ explains that he just pressed a button on the door which opened it up for them to escape. The investigators reseal the door and run to get away before the ship explodes. A few moments later, the ship explodes into a huge fireball. Betterman apologises to Jago and Litefoot as the ship could have been their one chance of returning home. But Litefoot is not so sure, when he was destroying the controls, he salvaged the stabilising component from the ship, but the possibility is uncertain for sure. All they need to do is return to the House of the Dragon…

The group arrive in the alleyway by the House of the Dragon, the place where they arrived. Litefoot theorises that the portal should residually still be present. He activates the stabilising component and suddenly a portal emerges into existence! Jago and Litefoot bid farewell to their new friends and step through the portal...

Once the Infernal Investigators disappear into the portal, it closes behind them. Quick suggests that all five of them go to the Red Tavern to celebrate their victory, while ‘Litefoot’ suggests they discuss a possible partnership with Aubrey and Betterman.

Jago and Litefoot exit the portal. Jago is pleased that they crossed through it safely back into their world. Litefoot tells Jago not to jump to conclusions as their world was similar to the world they just came from, so it is still very possible that this could be another universe. Unfortunately, the stabiliser component has stopped working, so wherever they are stuck! Jago decides the best place to check if it is their home is to look into the Red Tavern and see if Ellie recognises them. Litefoot looks up into the night sky and notices something that gives him and Jago reason to worry. They notice a strange machine that looks like a zeppelin hovering in the sky, definitely something not familiar with their world…Litefoot is right…they have landed in another parallel universe…
