Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who JALS 12 E 4 Warm Blood

Go To

At the Red Tavern, Jago and Litefoot refuse to accept that Ellie could be their murderer, despite noticing her pale complexion. Both men try to make excuses to prove Ellie could not be their murderer, such as trying to remember things differently and that the cinematograph they saw filmed them at an angle where Ellie was not in frame, but alas they can’t seem to shake their nagging suspicion of her. They watch as Ellie steps outside the Tavern alone...

The next day, Jago is having lunch with Litefoot at his house. The front door rings and Litefoot answers to find Inspector Quick at the door. Litefoot invites him to join them. Quick informs them sadly that another murder has occurred last night with the victim completely drained of blood. Despite the grim news, Jago is pleased that it absolves Ellie of being the killer as she was working at the time, but Quick tells him that the body was not far away from the Red Tavern with a time of death being around 10:15pm. Both men realise that Ellie left not long before that time but chalk it up to coincidence. Litefoot agrees to look at the victim in the mortuary once they have finished their lunch.

At the mortuary, Litefoot examines the body and confirms that the victim died in the same manner as the other victims, with two puncture marks in the neck. Quick explains that other neighbouring boroughs have had similar cases, which the investigators hope Ellie is not responsible for.

Litefoot is reading a list of all the reported cases, along with all the dates and times each attack occurred. With their chief suspect being Ellie, Litefoot hopes to prove that the dates and times can confirm that Ellie did in fact NOT commit these murders. All they need to do is find out what Ellie was doing during these times. They both agree to meet at the Red Tavern that evening.

At the Red Tavern, Litefoot asks Ellie about her whereabouts a few weeks ago. Ellie cannot recall and immediately gets suspicious of the two men. When they try to cover for themselves, Ellie snappishly gets up and resumes working. Jago suggests that they just tell her the truth, but Litefoot warns him against it as Ellie could still be their murderer whether they like it or not. Litefoot comes up with a plan to provide Ellie with an alibi for a future killing. If they both keep watch over Ellie 24/7 without her knowing and another murder occurs during that time, they will know she is not the killer. Litefoot decides they shall wait for Ellie outside the Tavern after closing hours and follow her home. Jago points out one critical flaw in the plan…if they are wrong and Ellie does kill somebody…they will both be key witnesses…

That evening, Jago and Litefoot stand outside the Tavern not far from the entrance. They watch as Ellie angrily files out the drunken patrons as she prepares to close for the night. Not long after all the patrons leave, Ellie finally steps out and closes the Tavern. They let Ellie walk ahead of them unknowingly and then they start to follow her a few feet behind…

Not long into their stealth mission, Jago and Litefoot watch Ellie meet with a stranger in an alleyway. They both immediately recognise Ellie’s companion…Ravener! They both assume he and Ellie are hunting the same vampire but after their encounter with him, they know Ravener is not trustworthy. Eventually, Ellie and Ravener go their separate ways. Litefoot suggests they each follow Ravener and Ellie. Litefoot proceeds to follow Ravener while Jago follows Ellie. They both agree to reconvene at Litefoot’s house.

Jago immediately loses Ellie in the late-night fog. Meanwhile, Litefoot watches Ravener talk with a prostitute and witnesses him bite into her neck and drain her blood. Ravener discards the corpse to the ground.

Later into the night, Jago and Litefoot reunite at Litefoot’s house. Litefoot recounts the terrible event he witnessed. He managed to find a police officer and have the body transported to the mortuary but feels guilty that he could not save her. Despite Litefoot witnessing first-hand their new suspect at work, he cannot help but wonder why Ellie met with Ravener in the first place. Jago suspects that they could possibly be working together. Suddenly, the doorbell rings persistently and Litefoot finds Ellie at the door! She angrily reveals that she was aware Jago was following her, so in turn she followed him to Litefoot’s house after hiding from him. With their cover blown, Litefoot decides to invite Ellie inside so he and Jago can explain everything.

Ellie knows that they have their suspicions about her being a vampire again, and how Litefoot and Quick have been keeping their investigations from her. Ellie tells them that she is aware that there is a vampire loose on the streets because she has been approached by a cult of them. These vampires know everything about her past and want her to join their leagues led by The Old One. She explains that Ravener told her that The Old One is planning a vampire uprising against humanity and take over the world. She does however know where they are based so she, Jago and Litefoot can take the fight to them! Ellie tells them to be quick as The Old One is already making his next move, so the three of them must go now.

On the way to The Old One’s lair, Ellie tells them now is the best time to strike as they will all be sleeping in preparation for their invasion the next day. While The Old One is asleep, they can kill him!

The trio arrive at an abandoned house, where Ellie tells Jago and Litefoot that this is where The Old One resides. They walk up to the boarded-up house and force their way through the boarded front window. Ellie takes the lead to show the Infernal Investigators where the vampires are hidden.

Ellie leads the trio towards a set of stairs that lead to a cellar. Despite Jago’s warnings that they should go in with some lights, they all head down into the darkness regardless.

The Investigators discover the cellar is lit up by hundreds of candles and several passageways. Ellie leads them to a picture surrounded by candles. Ellie reads the frame as ‘Death on the Platform’, both men recognise it as the missing painting from the Scarlet Gallery. Ellie tells them to show her what the painting depicts. Both men are horrified to see themselves in the painting, Jago is holding a gun and executing a soldier while Litefoot watches on. Ellie angrily demands to know why the painting shows her two closest friends executing her brother Jim! Litefoot sadly tries to explain, but Ellie is too angry to listen and shouts about how they have lied to her about the fate of her brother. She reveals that she did not just bring them here to look at the painting…she brought them here to kill them. Both men plead for her not to do anything she will regret, but Ellie admits that she will not be their executioner. At that moment, a hidden wall opens which Ellie explains leads to the hidden catacombs beneath London. Ravener and The Old One emerge from the darkness and congratulate Ellie on bringing the Infernal Investigators to them. Both men run back through the cellars in hopes of escaping. The Old One assures Ellie that there are only three exits, the cellar, the catacombs and…death…

Jago and Litefoot continue running through the cellars. They are both incredulous that Ellie has turned against them. They deduce that there are no other ways out as the vampires have not tried to chase them. He also tells Jago that he tipped the cab driver a hefty sum to inform Inspector Quick of their location and to gather as many men as possible to help them. Litefoot decides that they can either try and hide so when the vampires do come looking for them, they can sneak past and get out through the cellar door, as well as try and listen to their conversations so they can learn their next moves.

Jago and Litefoot approach the corner where they discovered the ‘Death on the Platform’ picture. They eavesdrop on Ellie talking with The Old One and Ravener by the entrance to the catacombs. Ellie is curious as to why she was asked to lure them to this house, to which The Old One explains that beneath this house lay many of his trusted servants. Tonight, they will be reawakened to invade London. The three villains walk away from the catacombs unknowingly towards the Infernal Investigators. Jago and Litefoot slip away just in time unnoticed.

Jago and Litefoot discover a wide corridor with several cubicle sections on either side. They walk to the end only to find a dead end. Hearing footsteps behind them, both men take cover behind a wall and see The Old One, Ravener and Ellie enter the hallway. The Old One introduces Ellie to the Sleeping Gallery, where his servants are sleeping inside the walls. The Old One remarks that he can smell Jago and Litefoot in the room but decides to leave them for his servants to find and kill. He calls for his brethren to awaken and the walls begin to crumble away revealing numerous vampires! With no other options, Litefoot tells Jago that they must get past The Old One or get killed by his minions. Both men shove their way through the awakening vampires but come face to face with The Old One and Ravener. With the vampires behind them and The Old One in front of them, The Infernal Investigators are trapped! The Old One orders his minions to wait as he wants them to savour their first taste of blood. Jago and Litefoot plead with Ellie for their help, but Ellie fearfully admits that she could not even if she tried. Hearing this, The Old One shoves Ellie to the Infernal Investigators stating that she will share their fate as she has outlived her usefulness, plus her reluctance to follow orders in the past means she is not exactly trustworthy. Litefoot tells Ellie to look at the vampiric horrors shuffling towards them and asks if she could really become one of them. Ellie sadly admits that she could not, which proves The Old One’s point. She grabs a wooden beam from the ceiling and begs Litefoot kills her before they all die. Litefoot refuses to do so, but states that they now have a weapon against the vampires! The three of them grab the beam and charge through the crowd of vampires and past The Old One and Ravener, knocking them all down giving them an escape route.

Once away from the vampires, Ellie begs for Litefoot to kill her again, but he refuses. Jago painfully cries that he does not want to murder another innocent person. He remembers Ellie’s brother Jim begging him to execute him as well to stop what was happening to him. Ellie realises what Jago had just said and asks for an explanation, but Litefoot reminds them that the vampires are on their trail and tells them to keep moving.

The trio run back towards the ‘Death on the Platform’ picture. Litefoot tells Ellie to take a closer look at Jim’s face in the picture. Ellie looks and realises that Jim’s face is contorted and animal-like. Litefoot explains that Jim had been infected with a lupine disease that was changing him into a werewolf. He begged the Infernal Investigators to kill him before he fully turned. It was a mercy killing. Suddenly, the three of them are cornered by The Old One, Ravener and a horde of newly awakened vampires. They hear banging noises coming from the house above. Jago and Litefoot realise that Inspector Quick and several officers have arrived to help. The Old One gleefully tells the group that they have merely brought more blood offerings for them to feed upon. Having heard enough, Ellie grabs the wooden beam, charges at The Old One and impales him through the chest! The Old One writhes in pain as he disintegrates to dust, followed by all his minions behind him. Ellie explains that they were all linked to The Old One’s life essence. With him dead, they all die as well. Ravener is outraged and pounces onto Ellie and begins to viciously maul her. Jago grabs the beam from the remains of The Old One and stabs Ravener through the chest, killing him. Ellie lies unconscious on the floor with a lot of blood pouring out of her wounds. Quick arrives and Litefoot orders him and Jago to get Ellie to his house so he can perform a blood transfusion. He orders Quick to give one last order to his men…to burn this house to the ground.

Outside the house, Quick is not willing to partake in an act of arson. Litefoot explains that it is to make sure that anything remotely vampiric left behind is destroyed as there still could be more of them hidden under the house. Taking this to heart, Quick agrees to turn a blind eye to the arson as Litefoot lights up a few matches.

After Litefoot sets fire to the house, he and Jago load an unconscious Ellie into a police carriage heading for Litefoot’s house. Quick arranges to stay behind to oversee the investigation into this ‘mysterious fire’.

At Litefoot’s house, Litefoot has completed the transfusion operation on Ellie. But as she lost a great deal of blood, the chances of her surviving are slim. All they can do is wait.

As dawn breaks, Jago and Litefoot ponder what made Ellie turn against them. Litefoot is not entirely sure but suspects that The Doctor’s archnemesis The Master may have done something to her. Jago curses his name and hopes that they will not see him again. They enter Litefoot’s guestroom where they find Ellie standing by the window. She mentions that she is feeling much better and for the first time, she does not flinch from the sun. She comments that it looks like it is going to be a nice, bright day today. To which Jago and Litefoot heartily agree.
