Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who CCS 8 E 12 Second Chances

Go To

After being a prisoner of the mysterious Company for months, Zoe's latest 'flashback' to her time with the Doctor talks about the destruction of Apollo Station and Artemis Station, events which haven't yet taken place in the present. Zoe seizes the opportunity to try and save Artemis Station in exchange for giving the company the secret of the Achromatics and time travel, but both she and Kym have their own agendas.

Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: Zoe is free of the Company, but there’s no guarantee that she’ll ever remember even her life before the Doctor, never mind her time in the TARDIS.
  • The Bus Came Back: Ali/Kym returns to try and access Zoe’s memories.
  • Call-Back: Ali looks older because she lost her spectrox allowance after her initial failure with Zoe.
  • Deal with the Devil: Zoe makes a deal with the Company where she will give them the secrets they have been looking for in return for the chance to save Artemis Station.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Jen asks Zoe to skim over the details regarding the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe's near-capture and subsequent escape after feigning a position of authority as she takes it for granted.
  • Gone Horribly Right: A computer virus created to move into the physical world rather than being confined to the digital becomes so deadly that it attacks a space station’s physical structure.
  • Ignorant of Their Own Ignorance: When Zoe learns that the Doctor and Jamie were apparently killed in the destruction of C Spindle, she only learns later that this was the area where the TARDIS had materialised.
  • Internal Reveal: Zoe finally receives confirmation that she travelled in time when she sees her own past self on Artemis.
  • It's All About Me: Jen attempts to acquire the virus Zoe told her about just to improve her own standing in the company, despite knowing about the deaths that will result from its release.
  • It's All My Fault: Zoe blames herself for the destruction of Artemis Station, feeling that she could have contained the virus if she hadn't been knocked out.
  • My Future Self and Me: Zoe saves her own past self, although the older Zoe is wearing a mask and uniform so nobody will recognise her.
  • Mythology Gag: The Doctor jokingly suggests that they never materialize in Scotland because the TARDIS is worried Jamie will leave and become a laird, which was apparently the initial plan for his departure.
  • Never My Fault: Kym dismisses the idea that she is responsible for the destruction of the station, arguing that they were going to die anyway. Zoe later uses this as proof that Kym won't shoot her, as Kym genuinely reasoned that everyone else was going to die anyway rather than her doing it herself.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Averted; Zoe has to spend some of her second time on Artemis making sure that the Doctor, Jamie and her past self end up where she remembers them being, but everything works out in the end.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Kym provides Zoe with everything she needs to destroy the company when she gives Zoe a chance to access the virus.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Zoe is so upset by the events of the crisis the first time around that she impulsively wishes on a shooting star.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Zoe wonders why Kym sacrificed herself for Zoe in the last minute.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: A man at a party assumed Kym’s hair just looked like it was on fire because of the joss-sticks, before Kym realized that there were no joss-sticks at the party and her hair actually is on fire.
  • Stable Time Loop: Zoe’s presence on the space station sets up the events that led to her past self surviving the incident.
