Family Tree

Bill wants to get to Big City before the other traffic, but when Tilly refuses to come down from a mysterious tree, the rest of the Greens are soon lulled in and discover a big secret about it.

"Family Tree" contains examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal:
Tilly: I’m merely relishing my time in this arboreal abode.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Bill has somehow forgot back in "Tilly Style" that sometimes parents have to listen to their children.
  • Answer Cut: After taking a head count in the Kludge and realizing Tilly has not come, Bill wonders where she is. Cut to the mysterious tree she discovered where she is revealed to be relaxing.
  • Arc Words: "This tree is real fine."
  • Backing Away Slowly: When Bill gleefully shows Nancy the map from Smalton to Big City has no traffic in the early hours, she slowly backs away from him nervously.
  • Big "NO!": Bill screams one, coupled with Skyward Scream, when he sees the traffic map has raised to the highest level possible with "fat chance".
  • Big "WHAT?!": Several of them by Bill whenever he sees his family refuse to come down from the tree and invite him to join him; he later gets a furious one when he sees traffic raise to high levels. He also shouts three of them in a row when Tilly tries to get his attention when he attempts to cut it with his keys.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Bill fails to make the early morning traffic, and there's very little chance of making it back to Big City early. But once he listens to Tilly and climbs the tree, he realizes it's the same one he grew up with and enjoys its memories.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode takes place in the country house's front yard, with the only major backgrounds being the tree and Kludge interior.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Bill's stress could have been avoided sooner had Tilly explained to him why she refused to come down from the tree.
  • Cue the Sun: The sun is rising when Bill comes to the top of the tree with Tilly, and it is that point he realizes how important the tree is; the episode ends with all the Greens vocalizing a melody as they watch the sunrise together.
  • Dwindling Party: A non-fatal example. The episode starts with only four of the five nuclear Greens about to do their stuff, with Tilly refusing to join them because of the tree she discovered. Cricket is lulled into joining her when she tells him to relax, then Nancy tries to get the kids down but Tilly tosses her one of the apples, and now she refuses to come down. Bill then sends Alice to force them down, but Tilly tells her to stop and smell the blossoms, causing her to realize why the tree is so special. Bill is now the only one left and resorts to cutting the tree down, but Tilly stops him, seeing how stressed he's become and tells him to come up and relax a bit. Bill comes up in the tree and recognizes it as the same one he grew up with from his youth, and the episode ends with all the Greens relaxing.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way:
Alice: [pulls out a sword] We can do this the hard way, [pulls out a grenade] or the harder way!
  • Growling Gut: Happens to Nancy near the beginning due to missing out on breakfast before her farm duties.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: After seeing the traffic route on the map turn dark red with fat chance, Bill himself goes red in the face in reply.
  • Minimalist Cast: The five main Green members are the only ones present.
  • No Ending: The episode ends with the Greens still atop the tree, with no explanation if they got back down and returned to the city afterward.
  • Noodle Incident: It was mentioned Cricket did something to Bill's toothbrush which was not discerned.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Bill chides, "What?! IS?! ''HAPPENING?!!" when Gramma refuses to come down.
  • The Reveal: The tree Tilly didn't want to come down from turns out to be the same apple tree Bill grew up with in his childhood.
  • Rule of Three: When Bill resorts to cutting the tree with his keys, Tilly calls, "Papa!" followed by Bill responding with a Big "WHAT?!", which happens three times in a row until he stops to hear her.
  • With This Herring: After missing his chance to beat traffic, Bill has enough and tries to cut down the tree with his car keys.

Unguarded

When Remy denies Vasquez's protection to attend a medieval party, he worries Remy won't need him anymore and gets a visit from a therapist to discuss his worry.

"Unguarded" contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Although Vasquez has had large parts before, this is his biggest role yet.
  • Big "NO!": By Vasquez when he sees Remy get supposedly knocked out when Cricket jousts him.
  • Distressed Dude: This almost happened to Remy as a newborn baby; when Viper Fang discovers taking the scroll away from Remy makes him cry, he ultimately resorts to kidnapping him along with it. Once Vasquez held Remy for the first time, he developed a bond with him leading to his Heel–Face Turn, becoming his bodyguard.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In this episode, we find out why Vasquez left the Order of the Fang. Viper Fang was willing to kidnap baby Remy for the scroll, but Vasquez disagrees and fights them. The Remingtons are impressed and offer him a job as bodyguard.
  • Morality Pet: While Vasquez has always devoted himself to Remy’s safety and happiness to an insane degree, it’s shown here that Remy was actually the entire reason that Vasquez turned against the Order of the Fang and became his and the Remington’s official bodyguard. Having Remy tell him that he doesn’t need his protection for the medieval themed party is so devastating to Vasquez that he needs to attend therapy just to deal with it.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: One of the Fang ninjas poses as a statue in the room where the ancient scroll is kept when Russell comes in to get it.
  • Origins Episode: We discover how Vasquez became Remy's bodyguard.
  • Security Blanket: The very scroll the Order of the Fang came to steal from the Remingtons is used as one by Remy.
  • Special Guest: Margo Martindale as Dr. Bloom.
  • Sudden Anatomy: Vasquez's hand is more detailed when baby Remy holds his finger.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Everyone speaks this way at the Community Center's medieval party.
