Bruce Wayne is getting used to Tatsu as his bodyguard, while Batman investigates a vicious thief named Magpie, who is also pursued by Lieutenant James Gordon.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Almost Kiss: Happens between Batman and Magpie. When Magpie has Batman strapped to an operating table she leans in to kiss him, only to be interrupted when they hear Ravencroft screaming from another room. It is subverted when Magpie successfully kisses Batman shortly afterwards.
  • Apologetic Attacker: When Batman tries to tell Magpie that he can help her while she has him strapped to an opperating table, she angrily yells at him to be quiet and kicks him across the head. She immediately apologizes and acknowledges that was rude of her. This is Played for Horror as another example of her unstable mood-swings.
  • Bat Deduction: Bruce does this to determine why Tatsu calls Alfred "Major".
  • Car Cushion: Magpie lands on a car after cutting herself loose from Batman's rope.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Played with. Ravencroft's receptionist, Cassie, is Magpie, but she doesn't know that. Magpie is a Split Personality who resulted from Ravencroft's Heel–Face Brainwashing. Neither she nor Cassie were aware of each other, though Batman hypothesizes that Magpie subconsciously influenced Cassie to take the job working for Ravencroft as a way to get close to her.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The two graffiti artists that Batman interrupts will become mooks for Anarky in the next episode.
    • Magpie pulls a Stealth Hi/Bye on Batman while he's watching Ravencroft, somehow crossing from the office in her building to the roof Batman is on and getting into her fairly elaborate costume in the few seconds he looks away, which is extreme even by Batman standards. This is a hint that she's not actually Ravencroft.
    • Batman is suspicious of Dr. Ravencroft. Later episodes demonstrate she's not the innocent woman she claims to be.
  • Inkblot Test: An actual test isn't given, but inkblots are shown and Bruce thinks of his parents' murder when he looks at them.
  • Kiss Diss: During Magpie and Batman's second encounter, Magpie briefly flirts with Batman and slowly leans towards him for a kiss, only for Batman to bluntly tell her that's not gonna happen and shove her away.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Braxton's device wipes the user's memories, leaving them an oblivious husk of their former self.
  • Made of Iron: Magpie can survive a God-knows-how many stories drop.
  • Never My Fault: Batman has to point out that Magpie agreed to the procedure that took away her memories and helped turn her into this. Of course, she doesn't remember that, and Batman actually feels bad for what she's going through.
  • Red Herring: Professor Ravencroft for Magpie.
  • "Take That!" Kiss: Magpie kisses Batman goodbye while she has him strapped to an operating table and about to erase his memories.
Magpie: I'd say "it's been a pleasure", but you won't remember I said it. So... (leans in and gently kisses Batman on the lips)
  • That Man Is Dead: "Margaret Sorrow is gone. There's only Magpie now!"
  • Tragic Villain: Batman truly sympathizes with Magpie and offers to help find a way to restore her memories. He also chastises Gordon for wanting to simply toss her back in jail, back in the place that helped make her this way in the first place.
  • We Will Meet Again: Gordon assures Batman that he's only letting him go because he owes him one and that this changes nothing between them.
