Station Under Investigation: Territorial Support Group

Tony is called in to investigate claims of police brutality when a full-scale riot erupts at a picket line.

Provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: PC Colin Cameron has one.
  • Body Horror: Danny has a petrol bomb thrown at him in the riot, resulting in serious burns. He jokes with his colleagues in the hospital that he'll end up with a bit of tan later.
  • Company Cameo: Tony takes a taxi to BBC Television Centre in Shepherd's Bush to interview the news editor there about the footage. When Neame finally produces the second videotape, the most incriminating part of it has been taped over with Andi Peters and Ed the Duck from the Children's BBC Broom Cupboard.
  • Connected All Along: The head of the TSG unit being investigated was the Chief Superintendent when Harry was a sergeant in Special Branch. Deakin was also his Superintendent, but he's kept that to himself.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: Not knowing how much footage of the riot Harry's seen, a sergeant tries to suggest that Billy was injured while trying to escape the riot:
Sergeant: [The medic] reckoned he'd fallen over the crowd barrier bashed his head against the gate.
    Harry: Twice?
  • Double Standard: Colin points out that part of the racism he and other Black officers face from their colleagues in the Met is the assumption that "[they're] all screwing every WPC they can lay [their] hands on." As he says this, the camera flicks over briefly to Tony, whose propensity for cheating on his wife with both female officers and women involved in open cases is both an Open Secret and something of a running joke amongst his colleagues. It's only become a serious problem for him now that Jenny has been identified as a key witness in an ongoing CIB investigation.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Tony takes a call from Mo while he and Sue are in bed together.
  • Open Secret: Mo jokes that she read about Tony hooking up with Molly and Deakin hounding him about it in the Police Gazette.
  • Powder Keg Crowd: The episode opens on a crowd of striking workers ignoring the police's requests that they disperse after what's apparently been several days of picketing.
  • Running Gag: Harry keeps getting kicked out of Tony's office just as he's about to tell him something.
  • Sex at Work: Tony and Molly have sex on stack of newspapers in a backroom at The Guardian offices where Molly now works.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Three officers in riot gear run onto the scene at picket line saying "Wakey, wakey! A-Team's here."
    • Tony mentions Michael Heseltine in a conversation with Huxtable about the police's public image.
    • When Mo sarkily points out that she's brought him some coffee and a roll, Tony says, "What is this - Little House on the Prairie?"
  • Undying Loyalty: Neame has a reputation for being completely loyal to his men, so much so that he actively obstructs CIB's investigation into the beating of Billy Page.
  • Wimp Fight: When Tony and Mo go to the Pages' house to speak to Billy's parents, Billy's brother and one of his mates jump Tony after he takes out his warrant card, which ends up with all four of them rolling around on the pavement and being told off by Billy's mother.

Colin's Dilemma

Tony tries to get Colin to cooperate in an investigation into one of Colin's colleagues, who beat an unarmed civilian almost to death. Tony tells him that he's putting his job at risk by keeping quiet. Colin explains why this is a lose-lose situation for him.

How well does it match the trope?
