Recap / Ben 10 S 3 E 6 Game Over

Go To

On a rainy day, Ben and Gwen are sucked into a video game.

Tropes featured:

  • Acrofatic: Gwen is surprisingly nimble when supersized.
  • Actor Allusion: Upon seeing that the video game was left on, Grandpa Max gets annoyed that they didn't turn it off.
  • Bag of Spilling: Once inside the game, Ben's aliens need to be collected in the form of tokens. He needs to find the Upgrade token in order to leave the game, and he only finds Fourarms and Cannonbolt along the way.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: If Ben had used Upgrade to get him and Gwen out of the game before the Omnitrix timed out then there'd be no risk of dying in the video game. Gwen lampshades this.
  • Double Standard: As Ben lampshades, if he breaks something it's all silent stares but if Gwen breaks something, she's a hero. Then again, Gwen managed to aim her destruction into something positive.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The Pop-Up Trivia reveals that Dr. Viktor, a character who would make his debut in "The Return", was responsible for the storm that sent Ben and Gwen into the video game, as it was a side-effect of the Anur System teleportation energy he would use as part of his master's plan. This can be evidenced by the fact the lightning bolt that sends them into the game is coloured purple.
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: If you're ever bored, purple lightning and a Galvanic Mechamorph can send you inside a video game to pass the time.
  • MacGuffin: The Omnitrix alien icons specifically Upgrade.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ben's clumsiness and overeager attitude causes Ishiyama to lose two of his three lives.
  • The Man Behind the Curtain: Without his armour, Kenko has the body of a child.
  • Mundane Utility: Upgrade gets used to jack the game and reduce Gwen’s score to zero.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Max is the one who realises that the Ishiyama praising Ben is actually Kenko in disguise, likely because he’s suddenly acting friendly to Ben.
  • Powered Armor: Kenko is revealed to be wearing one at the end.
  • Reality Warper: Within the realm of a video game Upgrade qualifies as this.
  • Read the Freaking Manual: Max is able to catch up with the others easily playing the game in the real world after reading the included instruction manual.
  • Riddle Me This: The statue guardian asks this of Gwen regarding the homophone of bow (the act of bowing) and bow (the weapon). After Gwen solves the riddle, the statue drenches her in some kind of enchanted water.
  • Shmuck Bait: Ben finds what he thinks is a jackpot of his missing, alien forms. It's obviously a trap.
  • Temporary Bulk Change:
    • Gwen briefly becomes a female sumo after she's doused in enchanted water. She turns back to normal when on the elevator to Level 13.
    • This is Ishiyama's power.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Gwen after getting weapons and her Temporary Bulk Change.
  • Trapped in TV Land: Video Game Land in this case. Ben, Gwen and even the Omnitrix aliens get redesigns to reflect the world of Sumo Slammers.
