Recap / Ben 10 S 2 E 13 Back With A Vengeance

Go To

As Ben unlocks new power over the Omnitrix, two of his most dangerous foes team up to destroy him once and for all.

Tropes featured.

  • A Taste of Power: Ben unlocks the Master Control by accident, allowing him to freely switch between aliens and remain transformed for as long as he wants, but is forced to reset the Omnitrix by the end of the episode.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Ben (as Stinkfly) and Gwen hug upon bumping into each other in the Null Void.
  • Big "NO!": Vilgax when he's sucked into the Null Void and he realizes he's been tricked by Gwen into going after a bomb.
  • Big "SHUT UP!":
Max: Never figured you were the type to take on an apprentice, Vilgax.
    Vilgax: SILENCE!
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Despite being made of crystal and magma respectively, Diamondhead and Heatblast do indeed have saliva.
  • Body Horror: Judging by Ben's anguish, let's just say it's unpleasant to watch the Omnitrix be removed.
  • Bring It:
Vilgax: When I have the Omnitrix, I shall enjoy tearing you apart, Tennyson!
Max: Why wait? Come and get me! [actives the Null Void Projector]
  • Call-Back: When Max reveals he still has the Null Void Projector, Gwen says she thought it was left back at the bunker at Mount Rushmore.
  • Chekhov's Bomb: The bombs that Max gives Gwen. They look similar enough to the Omnitrix's pod that Vilgax will mistake them for the real thing.
  • Continuity Nod: As it did last time someone tried to remove it, the Omnitrix sends out a huge lighting surge as a defense.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Ben over Vilgax and Kevin being both alive and working together.
    • Vilgax is surprised to see that Ben has gained greater control over the Omnitrix.
  • The Dreaded: Even though Kevin has been kicking asses all over the galaxy, people are still more afraid of Vilgax. Even when he's encased in ice, Kevin's crew recoils in fear.
  • Dynamic Entry: In the sky ride, Gwen is embarrassed by Heatblast hocking loogies over the side.
Gwen: [to tourists] I don't know him.
[a loud crash, followed by the roof being ripped open]
    Kevin: But we do!
    [Vilgax grabs Ben]
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Kevin telling Vilgax to show some appreciation for saving him prompts one.
Vilgax: Vilgax owes allegiance to no one, especially not some misshapen, chaotic amalgam of creatures... [realizing] from the Omnitrix!
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Yes and no. With Ben staying out sight, Kevin is content to search for him indefinitely. Vilgax chastises this waste of time, correctly guessing that putting Gwen and Max in danger will flush Ben out, which it does.
  • Exact Words: When the Omnitrix starts cycling through the alien silhouettes he says "maybe, it is some kind of an upgrade". The Omnitrix promptly turns him into Upgrade.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: The Omnitrix flashing white before Ben allows Kevin to remove it. As Ben reveals, it was him disabling the Master Control.
  • Foreshadowing: During the chase sequence, Ben (as Grey Matter) steps on Kevin's face before jumping away. Ben does this again before escaping the Null Void.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Vilgax's technology can only track the Omnitrix when the device is in use. Ben's messing around with the Master Control leads Vilgax and Kevin right to him the instant Vilgax finishes his sentence.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Observing Vilgax stuck in the ice, Kevin remarks he doesn't look so tough. Vilgax immediately breaks free and knocks him on his ass.
  • Irony: Despite being his least preferred alien, Ben transforms into Grey Matter the most in this episode (a total of eight times)
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Ben's quickly grows overconfident in his newfound mastery over the Omnitrix and he ends up getting dragged right into the Null Void alongside Kevin and Vilgax, forcing Max and Gwen to mount a rescue.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Wildvine's biology allow him to grapple with ease and traverse rough terrain. His highly flexible limbs are also good for bungee jumping.
    • As Stinkfly, Ben made some cash giving rides to tourists.
  • No-Sell: As usual nothing fazes Vilgax but a bomb explodes at point blank range and he has no visible damage.
  • Revenge:
    • Kevin acknowledges how getting this against Ben is his sole motivation for teaming up with Vilgax.
    • Though focused on getting the Omnitrix, Vilgax promises to tear Max apart once he does.
  • Oh, Crap!: Four Arms upon seeing the sky ride that Gwen and Max are on is about break loose.
  • Properly Paranoid: Max says he figured the Null Void Projector would come in handy.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Defied. Ben tries to distract Kevin from escaping the Null Void with the Omnitrix by reminding him that they have unsettled business. Kevin can't be distracted this way, though, saying leaving Ben trapped in another dimension with Vilgax would certainly satisfy his vendetta.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: In the beginning of the episode, Ben still wears his yellow rain poncho in his alien forms for some reason. Possibly because it's not part of his normal outfit.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!:
Vilgax: [grabbing Grey Matter] You can't escape me that easily.
    Diamondhead: [bursting out] Guess again!
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Giving up the Omintrix, Ben tries to spite Vilgax by saying he disabled Master Control. Vilgax retorts that, as a master of the Omnitrix, cracking the code will not be remotely difficult.
  • Status Quo Is God: Ben loses the Master Control by the end of the episode.
  • Story-Breaker Power: With the Master Control, Ben is able to fend off his two most dangerous adversaries even when they've teamed up. Small wonder he loses it by the end of the episode, given it would have trivialized almost all of his future conflicts.
  • Taunting the Unconscious: The first thing Kevin says when he sees a frozen Vilgax is "You don't look so tough". Vilgax then breaks free from the ice and shows Kevin why saying that was a bad idea.
  • Teethclenched Teamwork: Vilgax and Kevin don't get along.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • After getting utterly trounced by Cannonbolt and Technorg, Kevin now fights Vilgax to a standstill, something Ben failed to do in the entire series.
    • Ben as well with the Master Control.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Vilgax immediately tries to kill Kevin after thawing out of ice. Kevin even points out that he saved his life. Vilgax responds that he "owes" nobody.
  • Unseen No More: The Null Void makes it proper debut in this episode after only being alluded to in "Truth".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Apparently Niagara Falls is so beautiful that no one will notice Ben transforming through all of his aliens as he's testing out the Master Control.
  • Villain Team-Up: Vilgax and Kevin 11. It lasts up until they successfully remove the Omnitrix from Ben's wrist, with Kevin betraying Vilgax by attempting to take it for himself and leave everyone else in the Null Void.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
