Tropes

  • Affably Evil: Zsasz is impeccably polite throughout his entire confrontation with Jada and Ryan, being nearly moved to tears by their talk and even apologizing when he tries to kill Jada.
  • "Bang!" Flag Gun: When Kiki reveals that she's still evil, Alice grabs the nearest gun, only for it to pop out a "bang!" flag. She lampshades that she should have seen that coming.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Sophie and Ryan, and much more than that too.
  • Bruce Wayne Held Hostage: Zsasz is tasked with giving Batwoman one hour before he executes Jada, not knowing that Ryan, who is also there, is Batwoman.
  • Brutal Honesty: Alice is blunt in telling Mary that, yes, Marquis knowing Batwoman's identity was her fault.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Victor Zsasz returns.
    • Luke also gets his Batwing suit AI back, meaning Lucius also returns.
  • Calling the Old Woman Out: Despite her mother's emotional justification, Ryan is not ready to fully forgive Jada and calls her out for not only abandoning her, but also not paying any mind to Ryan once in the intervening years, which led her to spend a difficult childhood in foster care. Jada concedes the point and only quietly suggests that maybe keeping out of Ryan's life was the one good thing she did, seeing how Marquis turned out.
  • Canon Foreigner: Kiki Roulette is original to the series.
  • Composite Character: Kiki Roulette combines the function of classic Harley Quinn (crazy female sidekick to insane chaotic criminal), but she also designed all of the Joker's equipment, taking some qualities from Toymaker, a lower tier Batman villain previously unconnected to Joker (and not to be confused with Toyman, a Superman villain).
  • Dead Guy Junior: Turns out Ryan was actually named after Jada's dad.
  • Destroy the Evidence: Zsasz does so with the tape that shows Marquis killing his father, on the latter's behalf.
  • Due to the Dead: Mary wants to go to the wake of the hunter she accidentally killed.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Ryan has no choice but to break out fighting skills to take down Zsasz with Jada only able to reach one conclusion.
Jada: My God...That's why Batwoman didn't show up. She was here the whole time.
  • Evil All Along: Kiki was faking her supposed reformation and regret, and is still as much a psychopath as ever.
  • Expy: Kiki Roulette is the Harley Quinn to Marquis's Joker. Doubled down when she says that Harley was her psychiatrist.
  • Fanservice: The sex scene between Sophie and Ryan is much more explicit than usual stuff from the CW.
  • Groin Attack: Mary incapacitates one of Kiki's goons this way.
  • Insane No More: Alice reveals at the end of the episode that she wants this; she wants to use Joker's joy buzzer to shock her mind and no longer be a wanted insane killer, recruiting Mary to help her.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luke learns about Sophie kissing Ryan.
    • Jada discovers Ryan is Batwoman.
    • Zsasz learns that Ryan is Jada's daughter.
  • In the Back: How Zsasz kills Jada's security man.
  • Irony: At the start of the series, Alice was desperately trying to convince Kate to join her and had particular disdain for Mary for "replacing" her. Now, Alice and Mary have bonded, despite everything the former has done to the latter, so much so that they are now each other's closest confidants.
  • It Only Works Once: The joy buzzer has one last charge left. While Ryan wants to use it for Marquis, Alice asks Mary to use it for her.
  • It's All My Fault: Mary feels this way about what's going on with Marquis and Jada due to her stint as Poison Mary. She tries to make up for it by finding Kiki to fix the joy buzzer, but gets captured along with Alice.
  • Kingpin in His Gym: Zsasz is shown exercising in his cell.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Alice gets excited when she sees a talky teddy, one of the deadly toys Kiki used to make back in the days.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Ryan acknowledges that she is not so different from Jada in regards to shutting people she loves out.
  • Love at First Sight: Sophie reveals that she was initially attracted to Ryan when the two met after Ryan was arrested for drug possession.
  • Mama Bear: Jada is ready to meet her end if it means Ryan will be spared.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • No Name Given: At the end of the episode, Mary tells Alice that she is attending the wake of the hunter she killed a few episodes ago. However, she declines to actually reveal said hunter's name.
  • Obviously Evil:
    • While Alice is able to see through Kiki's Mask of Sanity, she fails to register that Kiki has set a trap for them.
    • Luke Lampshades that nobody in Gotham other than the heroes seems to have made the connection between Marquis's purple hair and outfit and the Joker's, despite them being almost identical.
  • Parents as People: Jada gave Ryan up to preserve her own reputation but she still wanted to ensure her daughter was Happily Adopted and would lead a good life. While Jada never checked in on her daughter over the following years due to a combination of painful memories and dealing with Marquis, she makes it clear that she always thought about Ryan and would've intervened had she known the truth about her situation.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: When Zsasz offers to let Ryan use her last moments to speak with her mom, she just tells Jada, "Duck!" and throws a knife at Zsasz.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When Marquis taunts Ryan about outing her as Batwoman, she shoots back that he won't, because it would require admitting that the daughter of Jada Jet accomplished everything with nothing and he accomplished nothing even when he had everything.
  • The Reveal: Jada had planned for Ryan to be placed with another family after giving birth to her; the $2 million she paid her doctor was supposed to go to her daughter's supposed adoptive parents. Unfortunately, the doctor scammed her and kept the money for himself while just leaving Ryan at a fire stationnote . Jada was unaware of this until she reunited with Ryan earlier in the season.
  • So Proud of You: Lucius's AI tells Luke this.
  • Spotting the Thread: Alice promptly recognizes Kiki in her new identity.
  • Starting a New Life: Kiki's new identity is called Kathleen Rogers.
  • Trading Bars for Stripes: Of a sort. While they don't join the military, Marquis uses his influence to recruit the inmates at Arkham Asylum to be his personal army to take out Batwoman.
  • The Unreveal: When Marquis is giving his speech in front of Arkham, he talks about how Batwoman should reveal her true identity and turn herself in. Ryan and the others, watching on TV, fear that he will reveal the identity right then and there, but he doesn't, just to torture the heroes a bit more.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Kiki makes a run for it when her goons are overpowered by Ryan, Alice and Mary.
  • Villainous Fashion Sense: Marquis's new suit is a burgundy version of Joker's classic outfit. He also dyes his hair, though not green like Joker, but a very Joker-like purple.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Marquis gets the public's endorsement after making a deal with the city, supposedly to improve Arkham Asylum. In reality, he plans to weaponize the inmates.
  • Villain Has a Point: Two cases.
    • Kiki gives Mary some legitimate advice in seeking redemption for her crimes by owning up to her actions and making amends to her victims. Even after Kiki's true persona is revealed, Mary takes this to heart. This also seems to resonate with Alice.
    • Zsasz points out that regardless of her reasons, Jada is still guilty of abandoning Ryan to a desolate life in foster care while she continued living in wealth.
  • You Have Out Lived Your Usefulness: Kiki tries to pull this on Alice and Mary after the joy buzzer is fixed.
