Go To

Batwoman confronts Gotham's biggest foe, while new information forces those closest to Kate to make some difficult decisions. Ryan's feelings for Angelique puts her partnership with Luke Fox and Mary Hamilton at risk, while Alice goes on a warped walk down memory lane

Tropes:

  • Back for the Dead: Commissioner Forbes is gunned down shortly after his return in this episode, paving the way for someone else to take his place.
  • Badass in Distress: Black Mask's men manage to get the drop on Ryan and if not for Sophie, she would've been sawed in half.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Just when it seems like Ryan is about to confess to Angelique that she is Batwoman, she just tells her that she knows Batwoman.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sophie saves Ryan in the nick of time before being sawed in half.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Ryan's reaction when Jordan voices her discontent with Batwoman's approach to fighting crime.
  • Calling Card: Jordan uses a distinctive graffiti tag that allows Mary to identify her almost instantly. Unfortunately, the False Face society has the same idea.
  • Cliffhanger Copout: Last episode ended with Ryan at death's door, with Sophie and Jacob still on the island and Luke urgently telling Sophie to get Batwoman back to Gotham, as they discovered Ryan's plant is actually a Desert Rose. This episode picks up some time later, with everyone back in Gotham and Ryan fully healed, as if there was an episode missing in between, but there apparently isn't.
  • Due to the Dead: The episode starts with Kate's funeral. Notably, Jacob is seen wearing a Kippah.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Black Mask's dead daughter.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Jordan is the foolish to Sophie's responsible one.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The camera thankfully doesn't fully capture Black Mask's goon being sawed in half.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Black Mask saws a mook in half for failing to capture Jordan, and nearly does the same to Batwoman.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Alice deduces that, in order to get over Kate's death, she has to forget her sister even existed.
  • Loss of Identity: What Black Mask plans to inflict on Kate, with the help of the mysterious Enigma.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Julia is trying to convince Jacob that Kate's plane crash might've just been a tragic accident after all, but he isn't fully convinced. Given that Black Mask abducted her, he is correct.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Black Mask implies that Kate was on the receiving end of one from his goons after she put up a fight when they tried to pull her from the plane wreckage, explaining her facial injuries.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Mary tells Ryan that the latter's adamant defending of Angelique reminds her of Kate doing the same in regards to Alice.
  • Not What I Signed Up For: What Angelique says about Commissioner Forbes's murder.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: Angelique takes the blame for Commissioner Forbes's murder and goes to jail, since Black Mask threatened to kill Ryan if the former exposed the False Face Society.
  • Released to Elsewhere: Black Mask shows Angelique the corpse of a man who "left" the False Face Society, just as she is planning to do.
  • Remember the New Guy?: This episode introduces Jordan, the hitherto unmentioned younger sister of Sophie. Though it's downplayed because this only applies to Sophie, as not even Mary and Luke knew Jordan existed until the events of the episode made her relevant.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: Black Mask makes it very clear to Angelique that this is the case with False Face, showing her what's left of the last person who tried to leave. It's not pretty.
  • The Reveal: Black Mask is responsible for destroying Kate's plane and kidnapping her.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: In case you thought the previous examples too subtle, #DefundThePolice is being used by Jordan.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Black Mask's reason for doing what he does is wanting revenge for the death of his daughter, both towards the Crows and Batwoman.
  • Shipper on Deck: Jordan tries to hook up her sister with Ryan.
  • Swapped Roles: In this episode, Mary is the one who criticizes Ryan, while Luke takes her side in regards to Angelique.
  • Time Skip: A month passes between Kate's funeral and the main portion of the episode.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Angelique has Sophie pass on her key bracelet to Ryan before she's sent to prison.
  • Unseen No More:
    • Black Mask appears in the flesh for the first time.
    • Enigma makes her first appearance after being mentioned a couple episodes ago.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Roman Sionis has the reputation of a philanthropist who vows to help bring Forbes's murderer to justice.
  • Visual Title Drop: Ryan never says "Rule #1" but it's written on the marker board.
  • Wham Line:
    • Ryan is understandably shocked when she realizes, based upon the description of her jewelry, that Angelique was the getaway driver for Forbes's murder.
    • Julia notices memory gaps in her investigation of the plane.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Luke and Mary call Ryan out on her favouritism to Angelique, pointing out she's acting exactly like Kate was with regards to Alice by refusing to bring her to justice, and eventually threaten to do it themselves if she won't. They go back on it by the end of the episode.
  • You Have Failed Me: Black Mask has one of his people sawed in half for failing to capture Jordan.
